POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of College Counseling has overall responsibility for envisioning, planning and
refining all aspects of The Bay School’s distinctive, student-centered college counseling
program. This mission-aligned process focuses the college search on individual fit and provides
counsel around the complexities of affordability and access. The Director also serves as counsel
to the Academic Dean around the possible impact of contemplated changes in the academic
program.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reporting to the Dean of Enrollment Management and Community Culture with direct reports
being the Associate Director of College Counseling, Assistant Director of College Counseling;
and College Counseling Assistant.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of College Counseling will:
*Lead the college team as they work with students and their families through the college process,
advising both through regular communication, formal presentations, a weekly college curriculum
that begins in the middle of a student’s junior year, to develop a realistic, balanced college list.
*Share responsibility for collecting biographical information and composing letters of
recommendation in support of student applications.
*Cultivate relationships with college representatives by visiting campuses, attending professional
gatherings, hosting college visitors throughout the fall and winter and advocating for Bay
applicants through the admission process.
*Attend national and regional college conferences to understand trends and opportunities, to
strengthen the reputation of The Bay School and to develop strong peer networks.
*Mentor, supervise and evaluate the college counseling team in order to promote professional
satisfaction and growth, smooth functioning and high performance of the team.
*Assume responsibility for the development and management of the college counseling budget.
*Coach staffulty colleagues as they recommend and support seniors through the college process
and periodically inform them about the trends, issues and expectations in the college admission
world.
*Provide effective appropriate technological tools to support the college admission process
including Naviance and the school’s college counseling website.
*Share responsibility for presentations at parent meetings, admission open houses and participate
on the staffulty admission interviewing team. Serves on the Administrative Team.
*Supervise and supports the SAT prep teacher.
*Serve as the Bay School point of contact for external organizations such as the College Board,
ACT, NACAC, NCAA, CSCA and the National Student Clearinghouse.

*Has a passion for innovating and building within a young educational institution
*Possesses five or more years of demonstrated success as a college counselor in an independent
school
*Experience working in college admissions with established relationships within admissions
community preferred
*Demonstrates analytical skills and attention to detail
*Demonstrates excellent leadership, management, organizational, analytical, and entrepreneurial
skills
*Possesses exceptional communication skills, with proven ability to write effectively, speak
persuasively, and listen attentively
*Works well with students and adults of all backgrounds
*Is proficient with information technology including Google apps and SCOIR
*Holds a Bachelor’s degree
