Marin Academy

JOB TITLE: Music Teacher

REPORTS TO: Performing Arts Department Chair

CLASSIFICATION: Part Time / Exempt

START DATE: August 13, 2018

At Marin Academy, we believe that educational excellence should push the boundaries of what is known today in order to prepare students for a world we can’t even imagine tomorrow. Our unique educational approach inspires MA teachers and students to work side-by-side every day immersing themselves deeply in their subjects while honing the ability to think critically and creatively. And because many voices are welcomed and encouraged at MA, our students cultivate the tools they need to live their lives fully—and the inspiration to contribute as compassionate citizens to our world.

We seek an experienced Music teacher for a part-time (0.25 FTE) position beginning in August 2018. Candidates should have experience teaching music at the high school or college level. A bachelor’s degree in music or a related field is required. A Masters of Music or a related field is desired.

The mission of the Performing Arts Department is to cultivate the imagination, creativity, passion, and aesthetic sensibility of each student, balancing theory and practice, process and product, structure and free exploration.  We view the student as an emerging artist and creator first.  All performing arts courses are strongly experiential.  Lessons in history and theory are integrated into the doing.

The Music Program is housed within the Performing Arts Department and consists of six music courses: Foundations of Music Performance, American Roots Music, World Music and Rhythm, Contemporary Music Seminar Jazz/Soul, Contemporary Music Seminar Rock/Blues, and Advanced Chamber Music. Other music electives we have offered over the years: Digital Music Production and Music Theory.

Music classes are composed of large and small ensembles.  The focus is on developing performance skills.  Students form “bands” within a class that can sometimes stay cohesive for two or three years.  Students learn the fine art of group dynamics, group problem-solving, and artistic collaboration, choosing pieces together, arranging music, and developing a group voice and work ethic.

A quarter-time music teacher at Marin Academy will teach one of the above yearlong courses. Duties to include overseeing two public performances by the class per year.

Marin Academy is situated on a 10-acre campus at the base of the hills of San Rafael, CA in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a 9-12 grade independent, college preparatory high school, we have an enrollment of 420 students with academic talent, interest in the arts and athletics, and a passion for a multitude of issues. Our students come from San Francisco, the East Bay, and Sonoma in addition to Marin County. Marin Academy has a block schedule in which classes meet every other day for 75-minute periods.

Marin Academy’s mission statement “asks every individual to think, question, and create in an environment of encouragement and compassion, and challenges each person to accept the responsibilities posed by education in a democratic society.” We welcome those with a progressive and innovative mindset about teaching and learning and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
