Responsibilities

Head-Royce School is seeking a culturally responsive, flexible, enthusiastic and innovative Technical Theater Teacher to both teach and lead theatrical design and technical theater support primarily in the Middle and Upper divisions. We seek to develop artists by establishing an appropriate and engaging learning environment and offering varied learning activities. Our educational philosophy focuses on preparing students for the skills necessary to succeed as global citizens in the 21st century. Our faculty create classrooms that encourage students to participate in experiential learning, take risks, view the world through multiple lenses, utilize innovative tools, and demonstrate proficiencies through a range of assessments that include real-world problems and performances.  We seek teachers who are not only excited by the content they teach, but who are also actively engaged in evolving their classroom pedagogy to reflect the needs of 21st Century learners.  We want teachers who are excited to join our community of learners and collaborate with us on meeting our Strategic Plan Goals.

Head-Royce teachers serve as advisors, club sponsors and participate in the life of the community.  We seeks applicants who have a strong academic background, experience in anti-racist pedagogy, an awareness of ecological literacy, an understanding of adolescents, and a genuine fondness for working with students at this specific age level.

Skills

Expertise in theatrical design; specifically set design and building and lighting design and facilitation, but also sound and video design and other related skills.
Ability to lead student crews in technical support for all school performances, and to instruct and supervise set building, sound, and lighting facilitation.
Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
Collaborative, collegial, flexible colleague
Clear communicator with students, colleagues and parents.
Strong organizational skills
In conjunction with the performing arts faculty (for art department events) and school administration (for school events), determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates
Demonstrated understanding of and curiosity regarding curriculum design, varied pedagogical approaches as well as different styles and types of assessment

Qualifications

Experience designing for theatrical and/or dance productions and large events (graduations)
Experience teaching and working with high-school students
Bachelor’s Degree
Thorough understanding of all aspects involved in technical theater, including construction, lighting equipment, rigging and sound.
Must be able to lift, carry, move materials and equipment required for supporting performances.

Advanced degrees/certification in a related field or in Education
