Job Summary:
We are looking for an elementary school teacher who resonates with the Friends School mission, which provides an exemplary education in a community dedicated to peaceful problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, respect for the individual, and quiet reflection. Our Quaker ideals compel us to create a diverse and inclusive community; we seek a person who will grow in and contribute to such a community, both within and beyond the walls of the school, and contribute to a more caring and just society..
We have two sections of each grade in the Lower School, which includes grades K–4. In 4th Grade, both lead teachers in each section have a full-time assistant teacher, and work in close collaboration as a cohesive grade-level team. Lower School students have specialist classes in Music, Art, Drama, Dance, PE, Spanish, and Library, as well as a schedule that allows for robust interdisciplinary work. We welcome teachers who are eager to collaborate with one another on projects and weave the disciplines together in order to deepen understanding and apply learning.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include close teamwork for curriculum development, committee involvement, attendance at special events and field trips, student portfolios, assessments and reporting, and clear parent communications. The school has vibrant and creative programs in the arts, service learning, technology, social justice, and social emotional learning, as well as the core academic subjects, mindfully choosing projects that meet our goals for student learning. We value collaboration, reflection and feedback, and a growth mindset among our students, and we strive toward each in our adult collegial work. We have a generous professional development program that aims to support teachers of all ages and stages in their careers. We encourage teachers to attend workshops and seminars, visit schools, and engage with contemporary research relevant to our Quaker pedagogy, learning, and the classroom, as well as our overall school and program.
Job Requirements:
Candidates must demonstrate:
Bachelor’s degree
2 or more years lead teaching experience
Effective classroom management skills
Passion for teaching and celebrating elementary age students
Creation and implementation of a creative curriculum
Commitment to collaboration and team building
Preferred Qualities:
Education degree (Masters and/or Teaching Credential)
Knowledge of current pedagogy and facility with hands-on and project-based instruction
Openness to Quaker philosophy
Physical requirements:
Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
