Position Description

Working closely with the Digital Literacy Specialist, the Front Desk Attendant performs a wide variety of library duties in the school library setting.

Library Duties:

Assisting students in making effective use of the Library’s resources, collections and programs.  This person may also need to provide technical training to students and staff as needed. Welcoming and checking in visitors to campus.

 

Work Requirements

The Front Desk Attendant must be able to work with high school students, communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. This person must be able to interpret and explain library procedures and information and be able to organize, and maintain accurate files.  A high level of maturity and judgment is crucial to this role as this person must respond effectively to the needs of a diverse student, parent, and employee population.

 

Responsibilities of the Front Desk Attendant

Functions & Responsibilities:

General

There is a receptionist-like duty that needs to staffed.
Supervises students and creates a conducive atmosphere for study and research.
Is responsible for the Library in the absence of the Librarian.
Manages library space when Librarian is providing in-class instruction.
This position is a non-exempt, academic year position.
Circulation and Collection Management

Conducts annual inventory of collection, including script, video and periodical collections.
Processes all new acquisitions and re-cataloged books.
Enters copy cataloging for new books in support of Librarian’s cataloging workload.
Circulates all materials.
Communicates with students and faculty that have overdue materials and assesses overdue fines through the Business Office.
Notifies the Librarian of worn or damaged books and repairs to send to bindery.
Assists in annual circulation and distribution of library textbooks.
Oversees reserve textbook lending.
Pulls reserve books for English classes for each trimester.
Shelve print materials in accordance with Dewey cataloging system and maintaining proper organization.

 

Research Assistance

Becomes familiar with print collection and online research tools in support of curriculum.
Assists teachers and students with basic research questions.
Student Assistance

Answers routine reference questions.
Instructs students on how to use the Library and the online catalog and directs them to the correct book location(s).
Assists the Librarian in communicating Library policies, events, or other important information to the Branson community.
Maintains supply “depot” for student use.
Provides assistance to students using Library computers, copiers and printers.
Other

Processes mail, orders supplies, makes photocopies and performs other clerical duties.
Proctors tests for students.
Distributes daily newspapers to locations throughout campus.
Performs other duties in support of the school, at the discretion of the Librarian.
Position Requirements

●  A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.

●  Able to work successfully with a diverse population.

●  Able to work well independently and as a team member.

●  Able to adapt to changing situations and priorities.

●  Solid technology skills, and comfortable learning new software programs.

●  Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

●  Strong attention to detail and the ability to organize efficiently and effectively.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and basic computer troubleshooting
Familiarity with Google Apps.
Knowledge of young adult literature is a plus.
Experience working with teenagers is essential.
Physical Requirements

On a continuous basis, sit at a desk, stand, or walk for long periods of time. Intermittently twist and reach office equipment; bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time at a desk or computer workstation; extend arms above the shoulder to reach and retrieve books and materials from shelves; grasp books and materials; lift materials and supplies which may weigh up to 30 pounds.
Use telephone; write or use keyboard to communicate through written means;
See in the normal vision range with or without correction to read typical business documents and computer screens; Specific vision abilities that include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision
Hear in the normal range with or without correction.
Work is performed indoors in an air- conditioned office environment with fluorescent lighting and moderate noise level.
Work is frequently disrupted by the need to respond to in-person and telephone inquiries.
