Year-Round Academic Enrichment Program
Position: After-School Enrichment (ASE) Program Teacher
Subject: High School Advising (HSA)
Grades: 8th Grade (Fall semester) and 7th (Spring semester)
Breakthrough Summerbridge Overview
Breakthrough Summerbridge, founded in 1978, is a tuition-free, year-round intensive academic enrichment and advocacy program. Founded by Dennis Collins, former head of San Francisco University High School, and two pioneering faculty members, Lois Loufbourrow and Mal Singer, the program they envisioned would utilize the resources of University High School to serve the city of San Francisco. For 40 years, Breakthrough Summerbridge has advanced three primary goals:
Preparing ambitious middle school students from under-resourced circumstances to enter and thrive in well-matched high schools, for the purpose of securing admission to, succeeding in, and graduating from a four-year college
Providing intensive summer teaching internships for high school and college students who are passionate about the power of education, and creating meaningful volunteer experiences throughout the academic year for members of the UHS and San Francisco communities
Transforming lives through the unique and powerful relationship between the Breakthrough Summerbridge and UHS communities and their families
These three intertwined and complementary goals unify our work. In 1989, Breakthrough Summerbridge San Francisco received a grant to expand the program nationally, and in 1990, Breakthrough Summerbridge New Orleans was founded. Today, there are more than 25 Breakthrough Summerbridge programs around the country and even two programs in Hong Kong, all a part of the Breakthrough Collaborative.
Our students and students’ families desire greater opportunity for more rigorous academic experiences and are also under-represented in higher education: 97% identify as students of color; more than 50% speak a language other than English at home; and 71% will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college.
General Job Description
The Breakthrough Summerbridge After-School Enrichment (ASE) Program spans most of the regular school year and is an extension of the main Breakthrough Summerbridge summer program. The ASE program’s primary focus is to support students in preparing to take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) Exam and applying to private high schools. Students begin taking Saturday SSAT practice tests and one Official SSAT Flex Test at Breakthrough Summerbridge in the spring semester of their 7th grade year and repeat this process in the fall semester of their 8th grade year.
Breakthrough Summerbridge is committed to helping students find the right high school for them, whether the school is public, parochial, or independent. We encourage students to take advantage of Breakthrough Summerbridge’s High School Advising Program, which is designed to help students and families navigate what can be a complicated process of high school admissions and enrollment. Our High School Advising (HSA) program is overseen by the Director of Student and Family Services, and includes both classes and private, one-on-one meetings. The process of identifying high school programs, filing applications, and completing financial aid forms is highly time-sensitive. The Breakthrough Summerbridge Office provides information and advocacy to make these processes easier.
