Located in Atherton, California, and established in 1915, the School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the National and California Associations of Independent Schools.

Responsibilities:
Menlo’s Upper School Assistant Director reports to and works closely with the Director sharing responsibility for the academic, social, and emotional growth of the students in the Upper School (grades 9-12). The core work of the Assistant Director focuses on the following areas.
Student Life programming: overseeing the Upper School’s advocacy, assembly, class meetings, student activities, and co-curricular programs and supervising the members of the Student Life Department (e.g. Director of Community Engagement, Director of Sustainability, Class Deans, Learning Center Faculty, and Mental Health Counselors). This includes supporting experiential programs (e.g. M-Term, Menlo Abroad), guiding the school’s social-emotional and wellness education, overseeing faculty leadership of robust enrichment programs (e.g. Mock Trial, Speech and Debate), and promoting participation in student clubs.
Fostering student leadership and voice: mentoring Student Council and ensuring that student voice is solicited and shared strategically throughout the school.
Faculty growth and support: joining an evaluation team for one third of the faculty undergoing formal review in any given year and supervising teachers in their non-academic duties. This includes collaborating with the Dean of Teaching and Learning and Upper School Director to welcome new faculty members, coach Department Chairs, and advance targeted academic and professional development initiatives.
Student Support: managing and supervising the Student Support Team of instructional support faculty members who provide counseling and skills training to students facing academic, emotional, or social challenges at Menlo. Strong candidates will be comfortable prioritizing and analyzing 360-degree data about a student so as to set targeted action plans for their short- and long-term growth. The Upper School Assistant Director may serve as the direct case manager for a particular student and is responsible for ensuring all case managers communicate regularly about a student’s trajectory through the school.
Discipline and student culture: ensuring that the school’s community expectations are well understood and accepted by all students and faculty, leading the Upper School faculty/student Discipline Committee, and facilitating all aspects of the disciplinary process. Simultaneously, the Assistant Director is charged with the primary leadership on the aspects of student culture at Menlo –civility, kindness and belonging– that make this school what it is.
The Upper School Assistant Director will also serve as an advocate for ten students, may periodically teach a class, and is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team.
Qualifications:
Candidates for this position must have a discipline-based BA or BS degree and a master’s degree is strongly preferred. Applicants must have had both teaching and some administrative experience at the high-school level. Applicants must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and an aptitude for leadership through collaboration. References should speak to the person’s exceptional leadership and organizational skills, integrity, strong understanding of independent school management and curricula, and capacity for building effective and appropriate relationships with students, as well as to his/her ability to be flexible and compassionate and to work harmoniously with adult colleagues.
