History Department Head and Teacher

Castilleja seeks to hire a dynamic, full-time Department Head and History Teacher beginning in the 2022-23 academic year. The ideal candidate will exhibit leadership, teamwork, a deep knowledge of world history and the United States History (within a global context), cultural competency, and an ability to engage with students in questions of equity and justice. The Department Head will articulate a vision for the department, manage operations, supervise the department, teach, and serve on the 6-12 Curriculum Committee. This position reports to the Assistant Head of School for Curriculum and Community.

The ideal candidate has proven leadership and managerial skills, at least five years’ experience teaching history and be someone who understands the “how” and “why” of History and the impact History has on identity formation.  That is, a leader who creates a history classroom/program that is full of meaning and purpose – a thought provoking place for students to explore the past and understand its impact on the present and future.

Educational Leadership

  • Align and articulate a clear vision for the department that supports the vision of the Assistant Head of Curriculum and Community and the school’s mission
    Must see themselves as a 6-12 educator
  • Commits to developing an anti-racist and culturally responsive pedagogy for the history department that integrates the school’s competencies and ICAs
  • Demonstrates knowledge of best practices and new trends in education through attendance at conferences and seminars, active membership in organizations, and subscriptions to appropriate journals.
  • Models a good sense of humor, respect and collegiality for others, and leadership.

Supervising & Teaching

  • Teach three courses, ideally at least one course in MS and US, and may serve as an advisor to a group of approximately eight students.
  • Take a central role in hiring teachers for the department, working closely with the Dean of Faculty, Assistant Head of School for Curriculum and Community, and the MS and US Head.
  • Model a growth mindset and both a commitment and excitement about the teaching profession, professional development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Serve as a mentor to all department members while giving extra, specific support, guidance and coaching to new faculty members.
  • Encourage and seek out professional development opportunities for faculty.
    Plan, facilitate and run regular department meetings.
  • Collaborate with Dean of Faculty, Assistant Head of School for Curriculum and Community, and MS and US Division Heads on teacher evaluation process
  • Build a positive professional community by listening, maintaining professionalism and integrity, and offering forward-thinking solutions while maintaining the dignity of individual colleagues, parents or students.
    Partner with the appropriate Division Head and/Dean of Faculty/Director of Human Resources to facilitate difficult conversations.

Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of teaching experience at a Middle School and/or High School level
  • Highly effective leadership, collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to develop, articulate and pursue a compelling vision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in subject area is required; a Master’s degree or significant applicable experience is preferred
