Lead Instructor - Nature of STE(A)M Camp | People of Color in Independent Schools

East Bay School for Boys—an independent middle school for boys in Berkeley, CA—is looking for a Lead Instructor for EBSB’s Nature of STE(A)M Summer Camp for rising 4th-5th grade boys. Nature of STE(A)M runs for four weeks: June 20-24, June 27-July 1, July 5-8 (4 day week), and July 11-15 from 9am-3pm, with Staff Training June 13, 14 & 15. The Lead Instructor will teach the curriculum of the Nature of STE(A)M Summer Camp, collaborate on curriculum development with the Camp Director and Summer Programs Director, coordinate and manage the supplies and equipment needed for all camp activities, communicate with parents and publicly represent the camp, and generally oversee the safety and wellbeing of all campers. The Lead Instructor will report to the Camp Director.

Duties specific to this position include:

– Teach and coordinate facilitation of curriculum and camp activities in collaboration with the Camp Director. Includes STE(A)M curriculum, outdoor activities, projects, games and breaks. Ensure that every camper has a meaningful, educational and successful experience at camp as best as possible.
– Assist with oversight of daily operations and activities at camp. Support curriculum & instruction, team management, scheduling, supplies coordination, and all campers’ safety & wellbeing.
– Collaborate and inform development of outdoor STE(A)M curriculum. Support Camp Director in development and improvement of lessons, projects and activities. Integrate EBSB’s principles for engendering engaging, thoughtful and courageous young men into camp curriculum.
– Maintain needed supplies and equipment for camp activities. Coordinate needed supplies and repairs with the Camp Director and Summer Programs Director as needed.
– Secure the safety and wellbeing of all campers. Hold responsibility for emergency contacts, information and on-site medication. Ensure physical safety and emotional well-being for all campers.
– Create an inclusive camp community. Incorporate identity-safe and anti-bias educational practices that allows a multitude of perspectives to be heard and respected.

In addition, we ask Camp & EF Program Directors to do the following:

– Participate in camp meetings before camp launch as needed.
– Assist in preparation and clean-up of camp areas before, during and after camp sessions.
– Attend mandatory three-day training in preparation for camp (June 13, 16 & 17).
– Effectively communicate with a diverse parent body as needed.

Desired qualifications specific to this position include:

– Experience as an educator and/or in a leadership position at a youth camp.
– Experience teaching or leading activities in science, engineering, technology, arts, math and/or the outdoors.
– Experience teaching or managing elementary age children.
