Multiple Positions, JK-8th Homeroom & Middle School (5-8th) Math; Hub/Makerspace; and History

Hillbrook School is seeking Resident Teachers for Early Childhood (JK-K), Lower School (grades 1-4) and Middle School (grades 5-8) to join our Resident Teacher Program for the 2022-23 school year. This is a paid, 1-2 year hands-on teaching and professional development experience for beginning and early career teachers. Resident Teachers immerse themselves in the intellectually rich and reflective culture of teaching and learning at Hillbrook School as members of grade-level and/or departmental teaching teams.

Hillbrook School is a junior kindergarten-8th grade independent school located on 14 acres of oak woodland in Los Gatos, CA. Founded in 1935, Hillbrook School remains deeply connected to its historical roots as a school where children are known, learning is authentic and active, and success is measured one child at a time. During the past 85 years, we have grown and evolved from a small boarding school serving wards of the state to one of the leading independent schools in the Bay Area, and yet our vision remains the same—to inspire children to achieve their dreams and reach beyond themselves to make a difference in the world. Hillbrook is located in the heart of Silicon Valley: 35 minutes south of Stanford University, 30 minutes north of Santa Cruz, and 1 hour south of San Francisco. Resident Teacher Program Overview: 

At the heart of great schools is great teaching. The Resident Teacher Program (RTP) at Hillbrook School provides students and faculty with an exceptional educational experience and environment. Modeled after the medical residency practice, Resident Teachers at Hillbrook are full faculty members, teaching shoulder-to-shoulder with lead teachers at their grade level. Residents engage in all aspects of teaching and school-wide responsibilities while collaborating, exploring, and exchanging ideas on cutting-edge practices as members of both a Resident cohort, and of their departmental and grade-level teams. Our school’s emphasis on collaboration and co-teaching creates opportunities for all of our faculty to make deep inquiries into teaching and learning.

Program Goals:

– Realize our school’s mission to know, respect and value each child and to offer individualized instruction by increasing the number of educators who engage with each child.
– Foster collegiality and reflection on best practices by creating co-teaching and collaborative learning opportunities for all of our faculty.
– Nurture early career teachers so they leave our program prepared for a wide variety of careers in education as confident, reflective practitioners with experience in a breadth of instructional approaches, and with a deep understanding of themselves as teachers.

Resident Teacher Responsibilities:

– Plan and prepare materials and learning spaces for differentiated lessons following shared learning outcomes, individually and as part of a co-teaching team.
– Lead daily, small- and whole-group academic, social emotional, and equitable and inclusive student learning, individually and as part of a team.
– Reflect on teaching practice and student learning with teaching team(s) and Resident cohort.
– Assist with the observation, assessment, and documentation of student learning.
– Communicate with families about student learning, strengths and challenges, as part of a co-teaching team.
– Attend biweekly Resident Seminars and participate in lesson studies.
-Take initiative, work independently, and contribute one’s own ideas to the team.
– Actively participate in a faculty committed to lifelong learning at the leading edge of JK-8 education by building strong professional relationships, actively seeking learning opportunities, and engaging in committees, audits, Diversity Equity & Inclusion protocol groups, and other professional development available through the school.
