ROLE OVERVIEW
Athenian seeks an US Dean of Student Life whose primary focus is the social, mental, and emotional well-being of all Athenian students. This position will work to promote the power of student voice and involvement in all aspects of student life and will partner closely with the Director of DEIS to ensure that diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice are a critical component of all areas of the Upper School.
This integral position is a member of the Upper School Leadership team, partnering closely with the US Academic Dean, the US Dean of Faculty Development, the Dean of Residential Life and the Assistant Head/Head of Upper School to create a campus culture of joy, reflection, learning, and community responsibility. This person lives on campus, participating fully in the life of the Upper School and serving as part of the administrator on duty team. This position chairs the Student Support Team, ensuring that Athenian is thoughtfully planning for and responding to both individual student challenges and thematic concerns.
The Dean will implement and oversee the creation of a restorative justice program at Athenian, shifting the student accountability model to one where all outcomes are equitable, transparent, mission-aligned and student centered. This position will work to create, and implement, a comprehensive Social Emotional Learning curriculum and will create programming throughout the calendar year where the Upper School community comes together. The Dean will build a strong advisory program with a focus on ensuring that each Athenian student builds and sustains connections with campus adults.
Successful candidates will have significant high school teaching experience and a deep understanding of adolescent development, social-emotional wellbeing, and trauma-informed education. They will possess a demonstrated commitment to cultural competence and will have experience using restorative practices to resolve conflict and navigate student accountability.
