Job Title: Aquatics Program Director
Reports to directly to Director of Summer Programs
The Aquatics Program Director oversees the lifeguarding staff and is responsible for the safety of all pool activities, swim lesson program, and pool area care. Lifeguards, while leading pool activities, will participate as members of the Devil Mountain Summer Camp (DMSC) program staff when appropriate.
Full Summer Program Overview:
Starting in March: 15-25 hours of flexible pre-summer planning and hiring hours
Pre- training June 9 – 11: which includes pre-summer planning and training.
Aquatics Program: Sessions 1, 2 & 3 (June 13-July 29)
Pool hours: 10:00am-5:00pm
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates in and leads staff preparations for summer staff with an additional focus on pool staff before summer programs begin.
- Creates and maintains, without exception and with great care, expected safe environment in and at the pool by all swimmers
- Hires, trains, and evaluates staff in conjunction with the Director of Summer Programs
- Supervises the maintenance of the pool through regular chemical checks, reporting pool status as needed to the Maintenance Department and Pool Maintenance Contractor
- Follows all camp/campus/pool rules and expectations
- Guides individual campers and groups in participating in all pool and camp activities
- Oversees and supervises as needed swim test as assigned to determine camper ability to swim/play in the deep side of the pool
- Creates and communicates lifeguard schedules and lesson assignments
- Creates private and semi-private lesson program, oversees schedule, and provides feedback and support to swim instructors
- Oversees curriculum for and mentors lifeguard instructors for Jr. Lifeguarding classes (when scheduled), and swim instructors for swim lesson program
- Maintains good public relations with swimmer parents/guardians
- Sets a good example for swimmers and staff, including punctuality, sharing clean-up, and empathy for others
- Models respect of all people regardless of difference of race, sex, age, sexual orientation, religion, physical or mental ability, national origin, ethnicity, or socio-economic status
- Mentors lifeguarding staff in how to learn the likes/dislikes of swimmers in private and semi-private-lesson contexts
- Recognizes and responds to opportunities for problem solving with swimmers and colleagues
- Provides opportunities for the group, when appropriate, so that each individual experiences fun in a safe environment at the pool
- Provides opportunities for positive team building and discussion of individual or group problems or concerns as appropriate
- Enforces all pool safety rules fairly and reasonably
- Other duties may be assigned as required
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates in weekly meetings with all program directors
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Trained and Certified, which includes certifications in both cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and proper operation of a defibrillator (AED). Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certified.
