Menlo School’s Middle School (grades 6-8) is seeking an enthusiastic counselor and Human Skills teacher.  This professional will have specialized in pre-teen or teen counseling prior to working in our school. In addition to the counseling aspect of the work, this position will teach the Human Skills program which is designed to help students learn skills that help them to develop their personal, social and emotional competencies.

Responsibilities:

Counselor

The Middle School Counselor is available for students who wish to discuss personal issues in a relaxed, confidential atmosphere. The Counselor provides counseling on a regular basis for students including social/emotional support, educational guidance, co-curricular coordination.

Serve as an advisor and coordinator when interfacing with parents, teachers, learning specialists, outside professionals and administration, as needed, regarding strategies to assist students.
Help students resolve teacher and classroom concerns and assist students in developing advocacy and problem solving skills.
Assist all students and their families as they integrate and encounter new developmental milestones into the School community.
Consults with and assists teachers and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students be and feel at their best.
Collaborate with grade-level teams, the academic support coordinator, the advocate coordinators, the Chief of Institutional Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, the school nurse and administration to provide comprehensive support for the whole child.
Lead and provide guidance to grade level advocacy coordinators in the creation and delivery of social-emotional learning curriculum and activities.
Work with Middle School as needed to integrate social-emotional/values-based curricula into all content areas.
Sit on various parent education committees aimed at increasing parent awareness of issues related to adolescent development. Serve as a lead for the Middle School parent education lunch series, parent grade-level education evening events and biennial Parent and Faculty Education Conference.

Human Skills Teacher

Execute classroom lessons in Human Skills – a comprehensive wellness SEL curriculum that students take during each year of Middle School. During the Human Skills program, students learn skills that aim to develop their personal, social and emotional competencies. In addition, these classes provide a trusting environment for students to explore the pre-teen and teen experience. Topics over the three years may include effective communication, mindfulness, self-esteem, digital citizenship, brain fitness, media literacy, healthy relationships, health, drug and alcohol education, diversity and inclusion, human sexuality, and identity development.

Manage frequent and ongoing verbal and written communication with students, parents and colleagues.
Be available and present to help students during and after school day.
Develop Human Skills curriculum
Incorporate current events or timely research into Human Skills lessons. Share new developments in adolescence with teachers and parents.

Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in School Counseling, an MSW or a related field is required.
Minimum of three to five years prior counseling experience at the middle school level.
Genuine love of middle school-age children and a desire to work with all types of learners.
Being a positive and contributing member of the professional community.
Candidates must have strong interpersonal, technology and organizational skills.
Experience in individual and group counseling and educational programming.
Extraordinary communication and presentation skills.
Proficient in use of technology.
A desire to work in a highly collaborative environment.
