Scope: The focus of the Health & Wellness Educator is to promote health and wellness in our community. The primary way the Health & Wellness Educator supports this is in teaching a 10th-grade co-curricular class (see: 2021-2022 course syllabus) that covers a range of topics including sexual health (fact-based, sex-positive framework), sexuality, mental health, and addiction prevention (value of postponement with brain development research) in a manner that is aligned with Bay’s mission and philosophy. The purpose of this class is to invite students to reflect on personal values, the choices they will make as they build new and more complex relationships, and making informed decisions that are congruent with their authentic selves. The Health & Wellness Educator also offers parent/guardian and staffulty education around similar topics through evening presentations, webinars, and/or professional development. In all areas, the Health and Wellness Educator works closely with the Student Life Office.
Major responsibilities of the Health and Wellness Educator:
● Teaching (65%)
○ teach 4-5 sections of a weekly Choices course each semester (total 8-10 sections per year)
● Parent/Guardian Education (20%)
○ help parents/guardians deepen their understanding of adolescent health and addiction prevention, increasing and strengthening their communication with their child(ren) about such topics through workshops, videos and newsletters
● Community Workshops (15%)
○ offer workshops for all grades on topics such as sexual assault/sexual harassment (SA/SH) awareness and prevention, relationships and consent in college, navigating social decisions related to substance use, etc.
○ offer workshops for staffulty related to adolescent health and wellness topics ○ facilitate or consult on curriculum development for other co-curricular courses related to health (topics may include sleep, nutrition, brain development, addiction prevention, etc.)
Required qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree or above in a related field, e.g. public health, biology, social work, gender studies
● Minimum 4 years teaching experience, ideally in a secondary school setting ● Ability to work on-site during school hours, 8:00-4:00pm, as well as on occasional nights and weekends
● Ability to work in a shared office and to sit/stand for periods of time

● has experience creating, delivering and revising curricula that offers student-centered classes on how to develop positive, healthy relationships with one’s self and others;
● educates with a sex-positive and education-focused lens and framework;
● is highly collaborative, flexible, responsive, and organized;
● has strong social-emotional intelligence, empathy, active listening skills, and clear boundaries; ● is a highly skilled written and effective verbal communicator for a variety of audiences; ● embodies cultural competency and has a demonstrated commitment to equity, antiracism, and
social justice, including an understanding of how identity and intersectionality impact a student’s experience;
● has a willingness to partner and work effectively with several constituencies (colleagues, students, parents/guardians, and community at large) in support of students;
● has experience designing and facilitating compelling workshops or presentations on topics related to adolescent mental, emotional, and physical health ;
● has experience working with a diverse student population, including those with learning differences/disabilities;
● has an expansive knowledge of gender identity and experience working with gender-fluid, nonbinary, questioning, and transitioning youth;
● has experience with or training in mindfulness; and
● has a growth mindset with the ability to give, receive and incorporate feedback.
The ideal Health and Wellness Educator is knowledgeable in the developmental needs of high school students, is committed to developing a student-centered and developmentally-appropriate approach, and is able to build strong relationships within the community and to reinforce the school’s overall mission and precepts.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
