Dean of Faculty

The Bay School, a national leader in secondary education, invites nominations and applications for the next Dean of Faculty. Bay prides itself on balancing challenging academics and innovative thinking with a mindful approach to learning and life. The School’s 100 faculty and staff (known collectively at Bay as “staffulty”) share the goal of seeing the School’s 440 students unlock their individual and collective potential so they begin to realize their roles in a dynamic world. Bay’s Board of Trustees and staffulty have committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion as key components of the School’s most recent Strategic Plan and have adopted a formal statement defining and emphasizing this commitment. Bay’s Precepts likewise ask each member of the Bay community to attend to individual perceptions and actions. The Bay School’s campus is located in the Presidio, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The only accredited high school located in a national park, Bay is surrounded by expansive open space, including 24 miles of trails, the beach at Crissy Field, and incomparable views of the Golden Gate Bridge and bay. The school is part of the vibrant Presidio community, which includes businesses, nonprofits, and foundations focused on the environment, arts and culture, science, technology, and global issues.

The Dean of Faculty is a key school leader responsible for working strategically and collaboratively to advance and sustain Bay’s faculty and foster a culture of growth in the faculty that aligns with the School’s mission and philosophy. Reporting to the Associate Head of School, and working closely with the Head of School, Dean of Academics & Innovation, and Department Chairs, the Dean of Faculty takes lead on the recruitment, retention and ongoing professional development and evaluation of faculty to ensure that the highest standards are being met in in serving Bay’s students through regular conversations with teachers about their practice. The Dean of Faculty is also responsible for understanding and advocating for faculty needs within the larger picture of school priorities. The Dean of Faculty also serves on the eight-person Educational Leadership Team (ELT), supervises Bay’s Department Chairs, Instructional Coaches, and Fellows Program Coordinator, teaches an academic or co-curricular course each year and serves as a student or leadership advisor. They will also connect with practitioners and thought-leaders in the field, and participate in or lead the development of local or national workshops beyond Bay.

The ideal candidate for the next Dean of Faculty will have a comprehensive understanding of the field teaching and learning, particularly in the progressive educational space, and a demonstrated willingness to explore and embrace new pedagogical practices, technologies, and developing trends. This position requires a leader with a deep sense of emotional intelligence; confident and competent, with a strong collaborative style of leadership; one who understands the subtleties of coaching and motivating individuals and groups. Additionally, this role demands a high level of cultural competence and commitment to diversity, equity, belonging, and social justice both in the approach to the work and in the building of relationships with students, faculty, and other community members.
