The Branson School is a coeducational, college-preparatory day school of 345 students, grades 9-12, located in Marin County, California. Branson is more than just a great school. It’s an ever-evolving educational community that challenges and supports students as they grow into confident, thoughtful, ethical people.

Job Summary:

 

The Human Development program aims to provide current information to students, and to create safe spaces to have difficult conversations about issues adolescents must navigate in high school. Rooted in developmentally appropriate social-emotional teaching strategies, the topics evolve to maintain the most relevance to present-day teenage life. Developing healthy relationships and personal integrity are at  the core of the Human Development curriculum, along with issues of health, well-being, and self-care. Branson students take two semester-long HD courses, one in each of their first and second years. Candidates should have a background in health education; experience working with teenagers; an understanding of adolescent identity development; and the maturity, patience, and good humor needed to engage and to challenge students in discussions about values, choices, and personal relationships.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach human development courses to ninth and tenth graders
Collaborate closely with the other teachers of each HD course to develop units, lessons and assessments
Oversee and update the scope and sequence of the HD curriculum, along with its overall goals
Collaborate with the DEI office and College Counseling to ensure that the scope and sequence of the 9-12 program meets the needs of our students and prepares them for life beyond Branson
Work with the Dean of Student Life to develop an overarching Wellness Program for all students that will reinforce and be reinforced by the Human Development curriculum
Work with the Director of Studies to schedule Human Development courses for both students and HD teachers
Advise Class Deans and Department Chairs on issues of student wellness as they arise
Continually interrogate and redesign the curriculum so that it stays current with the needs of current students
Create a safe and inclusive classroom environment
Treat all students equitably, be sincerely interested in them as individuals, and make a priority of responding to their needs
Hold high expectations for all students and communicate these expectations clearly and regularly.
Hold students accountable for their actions and their learning
Engage and encourage students in the active process of learning
Incorporate appropriate and varied methods, materials, and technologies into teaching
Give timely, meaningful, and personal feedback on student performance and participation
Regularly communicate with class deans, advisors and parents about student progress and concerns as they arise
Serve as an advisor in the student advisory program
As an active community member, attend assemblies, staffulty meetings, department meetings, admission events and other required school events including nights and weekends
Be student centered and actively participate in co-curricular duties approved by the school — coaching, advising a student organization, serving on a committee, etc.
Respond to evaluations from supervisors and students professionally and constructively
Be available to meet with students outside of class to provide support
Be available to meet with students outside of class to provide social, emotional and mentoring support

 

Key Qualifications and Skills:

5-10 years of professional experience in health education and / or a human development field
Commitment to exceptional teaching, academic excellence, intradepartment and interdisciplinary collaboration, and nurturing the development of the whole student.
Ability to demonstrate our four core values and support our mission statements through collaboration, professionalism and critical reflection
Ability to pass state and federal background check, fingerprinting, and provide a recent negative TB test or screening.

Branson uses a salary scale that is based on education and years of experience and ranges from $73,063 – $142,944.
