The Athenian School is an independent college preparatory boarding and day school that serves students in grades 6 – 12, from throughout the East Bay, California, the US and the world. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Athenian School invites applications, nominations, and inquiries as we search for a Director of Experiential Education. The Director will be responsible for developing and implementing an integrated experiential curriculum (6-12) that honors the six pillars (or IDEALS) of Round Square (Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, and Service). The Director will lead many of our experiential programs, support teachers in developing project-based curriculum, and forge connections between many of Athenian’s signature programs. Key areas of focus include supporting Upper School faculty in the development and implementation of our March Term courses, reimagining and developing the community engagement/service program across all grades, continuing to oversee  the implementation of the school gardens, and actively participating in Middle School electives and Focus Days. The Director will coach and support faculty members in both divisions to develop experiential projects and curriculum, plan and develop professional development opportunities for faculty in developing experiential curriculum, and support the Athenian community to deepen our commitment to globalism and cultural competency. The Director will also teach a class or teach Middle School electives and serve as an advisor to Upper School students.

In addition to these responsibilities, employees  have the chance to apply for and serve as part of our residential life team which would include dormitory housing. Employees also have the opportunity to coach a sport for a supplemental stipend.

Successful candidates will bring strong cultural competency and the capacity to work with students, families and colleagues who represent a broad range of identities and experiences. We seek candidates with leadership experience in experiential education and demonstrated capacity for strategic thinking and planning. They will possess the ability to collaborate effectively with students and colleagues and an understanding of and appreciation for working with adolescents. Successful candidates will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with flexibility, creativity, and curiosity.

BENEFITS, COMPENSATION, PROFESSIONAL GROWTH & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Athenian provides excellent benefits and salaries are competitive and commensurate with work experience and education. The salary range for this position is $95,000 – $115,000.  Community members enjoy meals on campus and use of athletics facilities, including a pool, gym and fitness center.

All employees participate in school wide professional development, and have the opportunity to pursue a range of additional professional growth opportunities. These include, but are not limited to, funded participation in professional conferences and continuing education opportunities. Athenian provides needed training for CPR/AED certification.

All employees are expected to attend all-school functions relevant to their role and to participate in supporting the student experience with other school duties as requested by their direct supervisor.
