The College Preparatory School
Theater Tech Director/Instructor
Full-time Temporary Teaching Position
August 2023 Through October 2023
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time Drama Designer and Tech Director/Instructor for most of the Fall semester (August through the end of October) of 2023. The person selected will teach two sections of either Stagecraft or Design for the Stage and will also teach Drama Tech. Please apply by submitting a cover letter and resume in Applicant Pro.
Candidates should have extensive training in theatrical design and technical theater, as well as experience teaching high school or undergraduate students. The Stagecraft/Design classes are taught during the normal school day and are a fun mix of technical theater, design, and shop. The Drama Tech class meets after school, generally from 3:30 to 6 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and creates the design and tech needs for the fall play and music concert. Teaching time increases as tech week and the production nears. The person selected will be invited to participate in the design meetings for the Fall Play. Those meetings will likely take place in May. This position will not be required to oversee or implement the costumes for the play.
The Tech Director also helps prepare our auditorium for various meetings, presentations, and other community events. This will include setting up any audio and video needs for each event. The auditorium has a brand-new projector and sound system.
The College Prep Arts Department is unique, innovative, and rigorous. We offer a variety of courses in the Visual, Musical, Vocal, Dance, and Dramatic Arts. Student enrollment in our classes is kept low to maximize student participation and engagement. Students are required to take a minimum of two years of arts courses for graduation; the majority take more. The Arts Department actively cultivates and enjoys a culture of innovative collaboration and collegiality among its members and students.
Faculty at College Prep are compensated according to a step scale based on years of experience that ranges from $72,500 for teachers with no prior relevant experience to $143,700 for teachers with 44 years of prior experience. Temporary positions are compensated on this scale, prorated to the length of employment.
Benefits include medical and dental coverage, a retirement plan, and, most pleasantly and collegially, a prepared lunch every day. College Prep is a community of life-long learners and actively encourages and supports the professional development of all of its members.
