Summary:
Middle school teachers teach classes in grades 5-8 (this position focuses on 8th grade). They may be “lead classroom teachers” who are based in a homeroom for a particular grade, or they may be “Specials” teachers (such as English, math, science, social studies, music, Spanish, PE, Innovation, etc.) who teach specialist subjects across more than one of these grades.
The Middle School English Curriculum and Pedagogy
In 8th-grade English, students read a diverse range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and hybrid texts. They write personal narratives, short stories, OpEds, analytical essays, and children’s books that explore their passions, challenge their assumptions, and push them to take writerly risks. At SF Day the English Department regularly collaborates with the Social Studies Department to build cross-curricular connections and develop relevant projects. We build a culture of two-way feedback where students understand that not only are they welcome to bring their full selves and identities to class each day, but that it is an essential part of the curriculum.
