PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Athenian School seeks a full time Upper School literature instructor to teach two sections of our core curriculum (10th grade United States Literature) and two sections of upper-level literature courses (seminars that combine 11th grade and 12th grade). We are looking for a dedicated and collaborative teacher who can create and deliver content that sparks curiosity and broadens our students’ perspectives on identity, culture, and the role of language and literature in the world. Successful candidates will demonstrate experience with and capacity for developing students’ critical reading skills, activating lively class discussions, and advancing student competency in various types of writing (analytical, narrative, creative, etc.). We seek an educator who models lifelong learning and becomes an active part of our vibrant community outside of the classroom.
In addition to these responsibilities, faculty have the chance to apply for and serve as part of our residential life team which would include dormitory housing. Faculty also have the opportunity to coach a sport for a supplemental stipend.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
We seek candidates who have experience teaching high school English, classroom management skills, and hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in English, Comparative Literature, or a related field. Successful candidates will bring strong cultural competency and the capacity to work with students, families and colleagues who represent a broad range of identities and experiences. Instructors who can in future years offer an upper level seminar (11-12 grade) that centers a diverse perspective are especially encouraged to apply.
BENEFITS, COMPENSATION, PROFESSIONAL GROWTH & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Athenian provides excellent benefits and salaries are competitive and commensurate with work experience and education. Community members enjoy meals on campus and use of athletics facilities, including a pool, gym and fitness center. The salary for this role will range from $75,900 – $137,800. Additionally, faculty receive additional stipends for completed Masters and Doctoral degrees.
All employees participate in school-wide professional development, and have the opportunity to pursue a range of additional professional growth opportunities. These include, but are not limited to, funded participation in professional conferences and continuing education opportunities. Athenian provides needed training for CPR/AED certification.
All employees are expected to attend all-school functions relevant to their role and to participate in supporting the student experience with other school duties as requested by their direct supervisor.
