Lick-Wilmerding High School seeks a dedicated movement, SEL, and health educator to join the Body-Mind Education Departments ninth-grade team beginning August 2023. This is a one year 80% interim position. The BME department is a collaborative, supportive, student-centered team that nurtures students capacity to be active in their own social, emotional, and physical wellbeing, providing tools for developing self-awareness, building positive relationships with self and others, and learning to navigate the joys and challenges of their lives with perspective, wisdom, and skill.
As an institution committed to educating the whole child, LWHS both invites and expects teaching faculty to participate fully in the academic and co-curricular life of the school. This includes, but is not limited to, furthering the mission of the school through participating in our Public Purpose and DEI Programs; as well as routine attendance in all curricular team meetings, department meetings, faculty meetings, and office hours to support students when needed.
Skills:
- Expertise and teaching experience in a body-mind movement discipline that combines physicality with social-emotional learning.
- Our current team includes two yoga instructors; ideally, were seeking a candidate who can facilitate classes in a different, yet harmonious, body-mind discipline, such as a martial art, rock climbing, capoeira, etc.
- Ability to collaborate with a team to continue developing and administering our ninth-grade Health and Wellness and SEL curriculum and contribute to the holistic vision of the department
- A willingness to engage across difference with empathy and understanding
- Fierce advocacy for students and their needs
- Social and emotional acuity
- An understanding of your own identity and related positionalities
- A profound openness to feedback and improvement, modeling lifelong learning of practice as well as subject area
Core Job Responsibilities:
- Teach four sections of Body-Mind Education (movement, SEL, and Health & Wellness sessions) to ninth-graders in collaboration with the ninth-grade team
- Attend BME Department and/or Team Meetings approximately once per week
- Attend Faculty Meetings after school twice a month
- Fulfill school-wide responsibilities, including: chaperoning student events, working with admissions, and participating in the life of the school
- Engage in ongoing professional development under guidance of Department Chair and Dean of Faculty
Qualifications
- Bachelors or Masters Degree in a health, science, or education related field
- Documented experience teaching a movement discipline
- Experience working in a health-related field, or teaching health classes
- Display a deep commitment to equity and culturally responsive, anti-racist education, working with a diverse student population in a dynamic high school setting
- Be passionate about working in schools
- Demonstrate professionalism and integrity
- Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with others, both on a grade level team, as well as across disciplines
- Show initiative, optimism and flexibility
- Experience with student-centered teaching and learning, including differentiated instruction for students across various academic and social backgrounds.
- Evidence of commitment to lifelong professional development to grow knowledge of self, content area, pedagogical knowledge, and knowledge of students as learners
- Excellent organizational, as well as written and oral communication skills
Salary Range:
In the spirit of pay transparency we share the base salary range for this position: $72,500 to $144,700 depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Base salary is exclusive of fringe benefits and retirement plan employer contributions. Pay ranges at LWHS are reasonable estimates of what the School anticipates paying for a role but are not guaranteed. If hired at LWHS, your final base salary will be determined by factors such as skills, education, experience, job level, part-time status and number of months of work per academic year. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity with our current employees as a part of any final offer.
