Head-Royce School

MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHING FELLOW

(Full-Time beginning August, 2023)

The Head-Royce School Teaching Fellow Program is designed to help address the national need to train new, outstanding independent school teachers, by pairing new teachers with strong mentors, collaborative teams, and time to prepare and observe classes in advance of teaching.

This position is for recent college graduates or people new to the teaching profession who have an interest in teaching English or Humanities as a career. Fellows should have distinctive academic credentials, knowledge of culturally responsive practices, excellent communication skills and a desire to work with adolescents in Middle School. Some classroom teaching, or summer teaching experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Teaching Fellows will be expected to teach the Head-Royce English Curriculum under the supervision of an experienced mentor, as well as immerse themselves in the Middle School as a faculty member. Fellows will:

Teach two classes with all responsibilities for preparation, grading and parent communication
Meet weekly with grade-level teachers for planning and assessment
Meet weekly with an assigned Teaching Fellow Coach (TFC) to discuss lesson plans and class observations
Observe TFC classes daily for first month of school and at least 2 times a week thereafter
Observe other experienced teachers at least weekly, after the first month.
Develop a detailed observation plan in conjunction with TFC and department chair (suggest three visits each week outside of teaching assignment)
End of quarter check-in meeting with Division Head, Dept. Chair and Academic Dean
Serve as co-advisor
Participate in the Mentor program (8-9 meetings)
Complete divisional assigned tasks such as lunch duty, chaperoning dances, etc.
Participate fully in the life of the school including attending all full PC, department and division meetings
Teaching fellows will be required to do some preparation in the summer prior to the school year, in addition to attending some Professional Development for new teachers, as designated by the school. The formal school calendar begins in August and attendance at an orientation for teachers new to Head-Royce School is required. Teaching Fellows are expected to participate in the full school day. They will arrive by 8:00am and stay beyond the school day as needed, but generally not later than 4:00pm. The exception to this is the afternoon division and faculty meetings which all faculty attend; these meetings end at 5:00pm.

The Teaching Fellow Program at Head-Royce is a one-year program. The main goal of the program is to train beginning teachers giving them the experience they need to fully enter the teaching profession.

The Head-Royce School Teaching Fellow Program is designed to prepare participants for positions in other independent and public schools. Should a position become available at the School for a full-time teacher, a Fellow who wishes to be considered for employment must participate in the regular interview process required of all prospective teacher candidates.
