Algebra and Mathematics at Mark Day School

Skills, understandings, and attitudes developed throughout eighth grade include broad metacognitive skills, such as a growth mindset, self-advocacy, time management, and collaboration.  Students learn Algebra 1 and mathematical thinking skills over two years in grades seven and eight and leave Mark Day School prepared for Geometry in high school. Students learn to apply creative mathematical problem-solving in both theoretical and real-world contexts, persevere in solving novel problems by employing a variety of mathematical tools and strategies, communicate and critique mathematical thinking and reasoning, and collect and analyze data as well as apply mathematical models to make decisions. Teachers work to challenge each student within a differentiated instructional program.

 

Specific Role Description

This is a part-time role teaching one section of 8th Grade Algebra 1 to a group of 18-20 students. The class meets three days a week, once for 45 minutes and twice for 75 minutes. In addition to class meeting times, the teacher would collaborate with a grade level 8th grade math colleague and attend faculty meetings as appropriate.

• Work with learning specialists, counselors, and parents when necessary to design differentiated programs for students who require specialized support.
• Collaborate with colleagues to carry forward major project initiatives in the cross-disciplinary literacies as well as enhance the students’ overall experience.
• Observe, evaluate, encourage and monitor students’ academic and social development and progress.
• Communicate proactively and regularly with students, parents, and colleagues regarding students’ progress and needs.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
• Relevant teaching experience with a minimum of two years preferred
• Relevant subject area knowledge in Spanish
• Proven track record of working effectively to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racist education
• Strong skills with curriculum design, initiative, follow-through, organization, collaboration, and communication.

 

Compensation and Salary Range

Mark Day School places faculty on a published internal salary scale with steps based on years of experience in education. Full-time employees also receive individual benefits through the school as well as generous professional development support. The Mark Day faculty salary range for full-time faculty positions is $68,000-139,000 depending on experience.
