General Description

 

The Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services reports directly to the Principal. This leadership position supports Counselors, Deans of Academics and Students, Academic Support and Athletics. The Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services supports a widely shared vision for learning at O’Dowd that is characterized by equity, innovation, and excellence that aligns with the vision and Charism of O’Dowd and its Catholic identity. The Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services aides in the development of a school culture and instructional program that supports both student learning and staff professional growth.

 

The Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services oversees the Athletic Director, Director of Counseling and Health and Wellness, the Associate Director of Health and Wellness, Academic Dean and the Deans of Students. With the Academic Dean, the Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services oversees curriculum development, implementation of instructional strategies, articulation of learning modalities that influence teaching practices, and has a major role in teacher formation and evaluation.

 

The Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services works with the AD to provide direction and oversight of the athletic department. Collaborating with the Athletic Director to develop comprehensive athletic programs that promote student engagement, physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Promoting the well-being and academic success of student-athletes. Collaborates with the Athletic Director to establish performance indicators and assessment tools to evaluate the effectiveness of athletic programs while using data and feedback to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes.

 

Accordingly, the partnership of the Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services with the AP for Academics and the AP for Community Life is essential for school success. Together, these three administrators directly serve and support the faculty of O’Dowd and engage in much of the program design and implementation in support of curriculum and instruction that allows O’Dowd to successfully serve its students.

 

The Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services is part of the Academic Leadership Team consisting of the Principal and two other Associate Principals. This team shares all curricular and cocurricular leadership responsibilities that affect faculty, staff, students, and parents in all aspects of the Bishop O’Dowd High School Catholic college preparatory program to ensure the highest quality of spiritual, physical, and intellectual outcomes for every student.

 

The Academic Leadership Team effectively collaborates to carry out assigned tasks associated with school organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment and collaborates with faculty and community members in responding to a diverse community and student interests and needs. The Academic Leadership Team understands, responds to and influences social, legal, and cultural contexts for teaching and learning.

Hiring & Onboarding:

Hiring lead for direct reports.
New teacher onboarding (completed by the Academic Dean)

Professional Development.
Catholic Identity & Charism.
Instructional Practices.
Coaching on reflection and practice.
Equity frame.

 

WCEA:

Professional Development.
Engagement around EIP.
Capturing and reporting on Annual progress.
Lead for the 6-year cycle (completed by the Academic Dean).

Other Areas of Responsibility

Partners with department chairs on localized implementation of professional development.
Collaborates on the identification and implementation of academic department-specific equity outcomes for our students and how those outcomes can be assessed.
Collaborates on the articulation and celebration of O’Dowd’s student outcomes, in alignment with Charism.
Oversees all professional development expenditures.
Builds annual Calendar in collaboration with the AP for Academics and Directors.
Leads collaborative group of adult Student Care Team members in monitoring and responsiveness around campus climate and incidents of student harm, while also devising and implementing proactive strategies to prevent/reduce harm to students.
Works with counselors to identify students in need of academic and mental health support.
Tracks students on academic probation (with Director of Academic Support), and with Registrar and counselors tracks credits.
Attends Academic Review Board and partners with the principal and other administrators in appropriate follow-up.
Hiring, on-boarding, orientation, and on-going support of new teachers.
Manages 9th grade student advisory program.
Manages the academic dishonesty/integrity process.
Leads the school’s accreditation processes and tracks progress on the EIP’s.
Contributes to school web-site and other school publications.
Instructional coaching and mentorship of teachers around professional growth.
Collaborates with Principal and Associate Principal for Community Life on preparation of Summer Academy curriculum
Gathers data to inform program evaluation.
Partners with Admissions on new student recruiting, applications, evaluations, diagnostic testing, and orientation.
Partners on successful implementation of Summer Academy.
Supports and leads school events such as Back to School Night, Open House, Navigating O’Dowd, Departmental Diagnostic Testing, Back to School Activities including orientation for students and for teachers.
Other duties as assigned by the Principal.

 

Evaluation

 

The Principal will evaluate the Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services each year. The evaluation will be based on the school charism and duties and responsibilities listed above. Information for the evaluation will be gathered from the administration, faculty and staff of Bishop O’Dowd High School.

 

Qualifications

 

Bishop O’Dowd High School is seeking an associate principal with exceptional leadership skills and a commitment to Catholic education and academic excellence. The next Associate Principal for Athletics & Student Services will be a proven leader with a minimum of three to five years of administrative experience and a skillful communicator who can foster the core values expressed in the school’s Charism. The successful candidate will thrive in a school community that reflects the cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of Oakland. He or she will be a relationship-builder who is dedicated to furthering the school’s educational mission through partnership with students, faculty, staff, parents and guardians, the community, and the Diocese of Oakland.

 

A qualified applicant will embrace the Catholic identity and values of the school as expressed in the Diocese of Oakland. Applicants should possess a minimum of a master’s degree, with professional education and administrative credentialing, and have a proven track record of success as a senior leader. Preference will be accorded to Catholic candidates.

 

The new associate principal will take office in July, 2023.

 

Salary and Benefits

 

This is a full-time 11-month position. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance, Long- and Short-Term Disability Insurance, plus an annual contribution into the Diocese Pension account.
