An independent, coeducational, non-profit ECE-8 school, Seven Hills School, seeks a skilled and creative Middle School History Teacher who is ready to contribute to our mission of developing the intellect, engaging the spirit, and fostering respect for, and responsibility to our world. Founded in 1962, Seven Hills is a learning community located on a beautiful nine-acre campus near Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek, CA.
Position Overview
Seven Hills seeks a passionate and dedicated Middle School History Teacher to join our vibrant Middle School faculty to teach in grades 6 and 7. Our Middle School’s history program begins with a survey of ancient world history in 6th grade, followed by US history in 7th grade and modern world history in 8th grade. The history curriculum is influenced by our school’s unique travel program, which includes a 7th-grade trip to Washington DC and another 7th-grade trip to Europe that explores the role of the United States in World War II, as well as an 8th-grade trip to Japan that is part of a cultural exchange program with schools in Tokyo. The position includes the following responsibilities and additional duties as needed:
Core Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive and challenging history curriculum that aligns with the school’s educational philosophy.
- Create innovative lesson plans that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities.
- Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and critical thinking.
- Utilize various teaching methods, technology, and hands-on activities to enhance the learning experience.
- Regularly assess student progress through formative and summative assessments.
- Advise a group of 8-10 students to monitor their progress over time, and communicate with their families about their progress.
- Teach two trimesters of elective classes, which meet twice a week, on topics of interest to the teacher or the students (e.g. watercolor painting, origami, soccer, etc.)
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support their academic growth.
- Establish and maintain a well-organized and positive classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies to ensure a safe and respectful learning environment.
- Collaborate with parents and guardians to keep them informed about student progress and engage them in their child’s education.
- Participate in school and community events to promote history education and the school’s mission.
- Collaborate regularly with colleagues when designing the overall history program and special projects in the humanities.
- Provide a hands-on, inquiry-based model of teaching, and manage collaborative learning groups
- Provide ongoing communication with families, regularly reporting on student progress.
- Attend regular staff meetings, participate in grade level team meetings, and take part in ongoing professional development.
- Work with the Support Services team in service to students with specific learning needs
- Play a leading role in experiential learning programs for the 6th-grade such as an annual outdoor education trip and/or the 7th-grade trip to Washington DC.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in history or related field
- Experience in teaching (at the 6-8 grade level preferred)
- Experience in experiential learning programs

The application deadline is January 19th, 2024. After that date, we will continue to consider applications on a rolling basis. The Search Committee will review all applications within two weeks of their submission. Soon after, qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a screening phone call, followed by a campus visit for any selected finalist candidates. With the candidates’ permission, reference calls will take place after the campus visit. An offer will be made to the finalist candidate; all offers are conditional upon clearance of a background check.
