This is a part-time position

Start Date: Mid-August 2024

Summary:

The San Francisco Waldorf High School is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Choir Director to join us in August of 2024.

The Choir Director will lead and conduct the Concert Choir, usually a group of 20-25 mixed voices (SATB), from grades 9-12, and the Chamber Choir, an advanced singing group for 11th and 12th grade students. There is a piano accompanist for all rehearsals.

This position would work well for someone who is looking for another “piece” to fit into their schedule of teaching, lessons, church, or other choirs. These classes are taught on campus (470 West Portal Ave, San Francisco) on Tuesdays and Thursdays and each class is 55 minutes long.

The commitment is to four classes per week throughout the school year, with some extra time around two annual concerts – winter and spring – presented by the whole music department. There are occasional opportunities for the choir to sing in public spaces.

Compensation is based on hours taught, with extra hours for preparation and for concerts, including set up. The hours are averaged, and payments are made semi-monthly for ten months per academic year.

Qualifications:

  • The position requires excellent musicianship and a background in singing and choral music.
  • Knowledge of choral music from around the world and a willingness to bring a variety of music from around the world from many different eras, including contemporary.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with high school age singers, and the ability to inspire them to sing together.
  • Familiarity with Waldorf education is preferred though not essential

Compensation:

  • $78 per hour
  • This is a non-exempt, hourly position.  It does not continue through the summer break.
  • Benefits include San Francisco Sick Paid Sick Leave.

The San Francisco Waldorf High School is a small high school of about 180 students, and all students take four years of music. They choose among several classes: Orchestra, Jazz Band, Beginning or Advanced Guitar, Drumming Ensemble, World Music, Eurythmy Troupe, Exploring Music, and Concert Choir.

We have six dedicated teachers carrying these classes, most of whom have been with us for years. They are all professional musicians who perform, teach, and play in the Bay Area. We are hoping for someone who could see this as a long-term commitment as part of their music life.

Waldorf Education is the fastest growing independent school movement in the world. This dynamic, 100-year-old approach to child development and education—based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner—is continually reinventing itself to meet the needs of current students.  Waldorf education inspires life-long learning in students and enables them to fully develop their unique capacities.

San Francisco Waldorf School (SFWS) was founded in 1979 and currently enrolls 400 students throughout a parent-child program, a preschool program, kindergarten, and Grades 1-12.  The high school campus is located in the West Portal neighborhood which is easily accessible via public transportation.  Fifty percent of students identify as people of color.
