Director of Jewish Learning

This role is pivotal in shaping the Jewish educational experience and community life within our school, and within the San Francisco Bay Area’s Jewish community more broadly. The Director of Jewish Learning will oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Jewish and Hebrew education, ensuring a rich and meaningful integration of Jewish values, culture, tradition, and the study of Israel across all aspects of our school. The Director of Jewish Learning partners closely with division heads, faculty, families, and the broader community, reporting to and working directly with the Head of School.

Background and Skills:

• Commitment to, and deep experience with, non-denominational Jewish communal life and culture, and track record of promoting inclusive Jewish values

• Previous leadership role in a Jewish setting

• Experience in an educational setting, including knowledge of current learning
technologies and innovative teaching methodologies

• Familiarity with Israeli culture, literature, art, music, and celebration of holidays

• Proficiency in Hebrew

• Bachelor’s degree in Jewish Education or related field; Master’s degree or higher
preferred

Essential Duties:

• Serve as a lead resource for all things Jewish at Brandeis – curriculum, extra-curricular programming, parent education, service learning, and rituals

• Work closely with Head of School and other school leaders to shape vision and strategy for the school community

• Collaborate regularly with division heads and all departments

• Actively participate in all admissions and advancement endeavors as needed

• Supervise, guide, and support nine faculty members (five Jewish Studies, four Hebrew)

• Plan and co-lead five weekly tefilot/prayer services for various grade levels

• Oversee all schoolwide prayer service assemblies

• Ensure continuity and renewal of Jewish Studies and Hebrew curriculum

• Partner with Parents’ Association and faculty to plan and lead all holiday celebrations,
activities, and observances, including assemblies and budgeting

• Partner with the Head of School in planning school-wide Shabbaton

• Plan and lead the eighth-grade Israel trip, including family and student communications,
reservations, itinerary, and chaperoning

• Oversee the Shinshin (post-secondary Israeli intern) program, including selection,
supervision, scheduling, and recruitment of host families

• Provide Israel-related education and resources for faculty and staff

• Lead weekly parent minyan and provide educational support

• Communicate regularly with school community regarding Jewish calendar,
programming, and special events

• Foster relationships with local Jewish organizations and community leaders to enhance Jewish life and learning at Brandeis

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

• Work in a school environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and inputs from diverse constituents

• Attendance at (seasonal) evening and weekend school and community events will be required

The Brandeis School of San Francisco offers competitive compensation. The salary range for this position is $115,000 – $175,000 annually based on prior experience, education, and position requirements. Medical, dental, life and long-term disability, tuition remission, and retirement benefits are provided.
