Who We Are
San Domenico is an independent, K-12 day and boarding school with a tradition of innovation and academic excellence since 1850. Rooted in our mission to inspire inquiry, reflection, and purpose, we empower students to lead lives of courage, wisdom, and kindness. At San Domenico, diversity and inclusivity are foundational to our vibrant community of 680 students, including 140 boarders from more than 20 countries.
Located on a 515-acre campus in Marin County, California, our school blends tradition with forward-thinking education. The Virtuoso Program, with its nearly 50-year legacy of success, has long been a cornerstone of San Domenico’s music offerings. Home to a dedicated community of talented student musicians and skilled teachers, the program has consistently fostered excellence in music education.
Purpose Statement: The Virtuoso Program Music Director serves as the artistic leader, conductor, and key ambassador for the program. Reporting to the Director of Music, this role requires exceptional musicianship, leadership, and vision to inspire students, connect with families, and elevate the Virtuoso Program within the school and beyond.
The position is offered as a 0.60 FTE role, with potential for expanded FTE—up to full-time—for candidates with additional qualifications or interests in contributing to other areas of the school, such as teaching, program development, or administration.
Key responsibilities of a Virtuoso Program Music Director:
Conducting the Virtuoso Program orchestra and Sinfonia rehearsals, as well as sectionals as needed.
Selecting repertoire and arranging music for orchestral and chamber ensembles.
Teaching or supervising music theory, history, and performance seminars.
Mentoring students in their musical and personal growth, including preparing for college or conservatory applications.
Organizing student performances, including on-campus concerts and off-campus events.
Leading efforts to grow program enrollment and attract prospective students.
Collaborating with Admissions and Advancement teams to promote the program.
Building stronger alumni connections by organizing annual events.
Success in this role will include increasing student participation and program inquiries, enhancing the Virtuoso Program’s presence in school-wide events, expanding public performances, and fostering deeper alumni connections. In the first year, we expect at least one new performance at a major event, more off-campus performances, and 1-2 alumni-focused events to strengthen ties and support current students.
Required Qualifications/Educational Background and/or Experience: The ideal candidate will bring:
Exceptional teaching, conducting, and coaching skills to develop student musicianship at the highest level.
Mastery of classical music pedagogy and performance, with expertise in repertoire, technique, and training for conservatory or university readiness.
Proven ability to build, revitalize, or expand programs, demonstrating initiative and strategic vision.
Outstanding communication skills to engage and collaborate across the school and broader community.
Strong knowledge of the Bay Area music and education ecosystem, including its networks and opportunities.
A visible, collaborative, and positive presence that embodies San Domenico’s values of excellence, community, and inclusivity.
A growth mindset and belief in student potential, with a commitment to fostering inquiry, reflection, and purpose.
Bachelor’s degree in Music or equivalent (Master’s preferred).
