General summary:
Drew’s Co-Director of College Counseling oversees and administers the college counseling program, seeking both to support individual students and to develop a holistic vision for a mission-aligned college counseling program. With a total student body of 280, Drew’s college counselors have the opportunity to build strong relationships with the school’s students. A college counselor at Drew is both an expert at navigating college admissions, and believes that their role within this landscape is to empower each Drew student to find their own best path forward. In collaboration with the Co-Director of College Counseling, as well as Drew’s broader administrative team, this individual will build programming and curriculum centered on the idea that the college admissions process marks a culminating opportunity for each student to find and exercise their voice.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Serves as a college counselor for a caseload of eleventh- and twelfth-grade students and their families.
- Coordinates and presents informational events and college workshops for students and parents, envisioning such programming as a holistic curriculum centered on empowering students and helping each find a “best fit” path from Drew.
- Actively engaged in creating curriculum and teaching a weekly college counseling course to second semester juniors and first semester seniors.
- Maintains and builds relationships with college admissions officers, both to learn about best-fit schools and programs for Drew students, and also to advocate for Drew students by promoting awareness of Drew with college admissions officers.
- Collaborates with other administrators in the Drew community to integrate college counseling into the life of the school, including participation at public events, as well as by supporting faculty in the writing of recommendation letters.
- Works with the Academic Dean and Dean of Students to develop the school’s academic advising programs, and to inform the school’s ongoing curricular development.
- Coordinates standardized testing for Drew students, including the PSAT, practice ACT, and AP exams.
- Seeks professional development by attending conferences and visiting colleges.
Qualifications and skills:
- Commitment to Drew’s mission, and especially to a “best fit” philosophy in the college admissions process.
- Commitment to growth and collaboration in adapting College Counseling programs within a dynamic school environment, especially by prioritizing nimbleness and student-centeredness in a time of institutional change.
- Previous experience as a high school college counselor and/or within a college admissions office.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to responding with empathy in supporting the needs of a diverse student and parent population.
- Clear attention to detail and expertise in written communication.
- Management experience, preferably within an independent school setting.
- Master’s degree in counseling or related field preferred.
