Position Title: HLC Learning Specialist
Reports to: Director of Learning Support
Exempt, Full Time, In-Person
Salary range: $80,000 – $105,000
General Summary
The Learning Specialist is a full time position working in the Herbst Learning Center. The Learning Specialist works under the direct supervision of the Director of Learning Support. The Director and the Learning Specialist are responsible for providing learning support services to neurodiverse students through the Office of Learning Support. The Learning Specialist is a member of the Student Support Team. The Learning Specialist works under the direction of the Director of Learning Support and works directly with students, faculty, staff and parents to facilitate emotional regulation and academic success for Drew’s neurodiverse students.
The Learning Specialist facilitates the learning process for Drew students by reviewing student Learning Plans, observing classrooms and communicating with teachers and students to provide feedback and support for enhanced learning outcomes. The goal of such actions is to promote academic success and belonging in the classroom and to assist in the development of skills and strategies for increased student engagement and self-regulation. This in turn will help students to understand their own learning, to become good self-advocates and to be independent, resilient, adaptable members of the Drew community.
The Learning Specialist creates, manages and updates the weekly tutoring schedule, manages the Extended Time Testing Log and supports other programming such as guided study hall, extended time and make-up.
Duties and Responsibilities
Tutoring:
- The Learning Specialist is responsible for creating, maintaining and providing weekly updates to the tutoring schedule.
- The Learning Specialist communicates regularly with the Business Office to reconcile tutoring accounts, approve tutor timecards, and collaborate on tutoring policies including updating the annual Tutoring Registration Form.
- The Learning Specialist is responsible for leading bi-weekly tutor team meetings, communicating with tutors about changes to the weekly schedule, helping tutors navigate conflicts with students and families, and communicating with faculty regarding student progress or areas of concern.
Learning Plans:
- The Learning Specialist reviews the Learning Plans to gain familiarity with the learning profiles of Drew students who are registered with the HLC.
- The Learning Specialist manages students with Learning Plans at the direction of the Director to inform recommendations for practices and procedures that will facilitate individual student academic success and behavioral change in classrooms.
- The Learning Specialist will maintain and upload documentation for individual students in digital files as well as create and maintain physical student files as necessary.
Student Support:
- The Learning Specialist will manage a caseload of neurodiverse students ranging from 9th to 12th grade.
- The Learning Specialist makes classroom observations to become familiar with teachers and classrooms, ensure implementation of students’ Learning Plans, and support behavior management as needed.
- The Learning Specialist Will participate in weekly Student Support Meetings, communicate about students of concern, and will help to create Student Support Plans as needed.
Testing:
- The Learning Specialist will update and maintain the Extended Time Testing Log for HLC extended time and make-up testing.
- The Learning Specialist will be available to proctor such testing when it does not conflict with their other duties and responsibilities.
- The Learning Specialist will communicate with teachers and staff regarding the availability of proctors.
- The Learning Specialist will manage accommodations for final exam testing and will organize proctors, scribes, and readers as needed.
Continuing Education:
- The Learning Specialist should find and participate in continuing professional education to keep abreast of developments in the field of Learning Disabilities/ADHD.
- At the direction of the Director of Learning Support, the Learning Specialist will collaborate to provide professional development for faculty, staff and the Drew parent group.
HLC Website:
- Add Assistive Technology Resources
- Provide ongoing updates to be added to website resources
Other Programming:
- The Learning Specialist will be available to monitor, provide executive function support and proctor Guided Study Hall/ Learning Commons Resource.
- The Learning Specialist will help plan and facilitate tri-annual Parent Education Events with the support of the Director of Learning Support
Desirable Skills and Experience:
- A Master’s Degree in Learning Disabilities, Special Education or Educational Psychology, or a Certificate in Educational Therapy.
- Prior history working in learning support for at least 3 years, preferably with middle school and/or high school students.
- Availability to work some evenings and weekends for special programming such as open house events.
- Experience reading and interpreting Psychoeducational, Neuropsychological or Psychiatric Reports.
- Experience in diagnostic or remediation clinical work.
- Teaching and/or tutoring experience, work with students with mild to moderate learning disabilities.
- Coaching experience in Executive Function skills.
- Experience with applications for accommodations with standardized testing service.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with Learning Management Systems and Google Suite.
- Good organizational and administrative skills.
