Scope:

The Learning Specialist works collaboratively with the Director of Learning Support, students, faculty, staff and parents to provide academic and social emotional support for Drew Students. The Learning Specialist facilitates the learning process and assists in the implementation of learning support and student growth in the areas of communication, self-reliance and the development of self-advocacy, academic, and executive functioning skills.

The Learning Specialist position is full-time, year round position beginning August 1st, 2022.

Major Responsibilities:

Student Support:

  • Read and interpret psychoeducational and neuropsychological reports.
  • Assist in the writing and implementation of Learning Plans and where appropriate Student Support Plans.
  • Help students understand their Learning Plans and how to access their strengths to facilitate learning.
  • Work 1:1 with students for check-ins and tutoring.
  • The Learning Specialist will assist in the creation and maintenance of the HLC Tutoring schedule, including correspondence with tutors, families and other Drew Administrative staff.
  • Assist in obtaining accommodations on high stake testing. High stake tests include PSAT, SAT, ACT and AP Exams.
  • Collaborate with the Student Support Team (SST) to provide wrap around services for the student and to facilitate communication with faculty, staff and parents.

Teacher and Advisor Support:

  • Participate in meetings with teachers to discuss learning support in the classroom.
  • Observe classes to obtain information about individual students and to provide feedback to teachers.
  • Generally stay abreast of curricular tasks and assignments throughout the academic year to assist teachers in facilitating academic success.

Program Support:

  • Collaborate on submissions for the Drew Weekly.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Learning Support and the Dean of Equity and Social Impact to develop in-house professional development for faculty and staff.
  • Proctor extended time tests and standardized testing as needed.
  • Monitor guided study hall as needed.
  • Engage in various administrative duties as required to track and update communication, including but not limited to meetings with students, Extended Time Testing Logs, Learning Plans and Student Support Plans.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Learning Disabilities, Special Education or Educational Psychology, or a Certificate in Educational Therapy.
  • Prior history working in learning support for at least 3 years, preferably with middle school and/or high school students.
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends for special programming such as open house events.

Beneficial Qualifications:

  • Experience reading and interpreting Psychoeducational, Neuropsychological or Psychiatric Reports.
  • Experience in diagnostic or remediation clinical work.
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience, work with students with mild to moderate learning disabilities.
  • Coaching experience in Executive Function skills.
  • Experience with applications for accommodations with standardized testing services
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems and Google Suite.
  • Good organizational and administrative skills.
