Founded in 1908, Drew School is an independent, urban high school in San Francisco enrolling 280 students in grades 9 through 12. Position: School Counselor
The School Counselor is a full time, 12-month position who is a key member of Drew’s Student Support Team and who reports to the Associate Dean of Students.
Salary: $70,000 – $100,000
General Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join Drew School’s dynamic Student Support Team to provide support for the emotional, social and psychological development and well-being of the Drew student body, primarily by offering a safe and confidential relationship for students and parents to discuss issues important to adolescent life. The School Counselor is responsible for assessing student needs and providing appropriate feedback and recommendations to families and faculty to ensure students are appropriately supported.
In addition to the counseling responsibilities, the School Counselor will work in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Students, Dean of Students, and Dean of Equity and Social impact on various Health and Wellness seminars and programming for all four grade levels.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assess students’ social, emotional, and psychological needs and provide short-term individual and crisis counseling
- Provide individual consultation for faculty and parents/guardians regarding students’ mental health and emotional concerns/needs to develop supportive strategies for the classroom and home
- Collaborate with external mental health providers (when necessary) in assessing or supporting students who are having an acute or chronic issue
- Collaborate with external organizations to help proactively plan all-school or grade-level specific programming
- Serve as a member of the Student Support Team to plan and implement support strategies for students
- Work with the leadership team on various health and wellness initiatives
- Help with the Health and Wellness seminar program alongside the Associate Dean of Students
Essential Qualifications
The School Counselor must possess a current mental health license to practice psychotherapy. The successful candidate should be self-directed, collaborative, have experience working in a school setting and with extensive experience with teens. The School Counselor should be comfortable with public speaking and working with a wide range of constituents at the school as well as interacting with outside mental health providers. Essential Qualifications also include:
- Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field
- Active California license in a mental health profession (LMFT, LCSW, LPCC)
- Experience as a school counselor in a high school setting or with adolescents
- A strong commitment to Drew School’s mission
