East Bay School for Boys—an independent middle school for boys in Berkeley, CA—is looking for a Shop Instructor for EBSB’s WoodWorks Summer Camp for rising 6th-9th grade boys. WoodWorks runs for four weeks: June 20-24, June 27-July 1, July 5-8 (4 day week), and July 11-15 from 9am-3pm, with Staff Training June 13, 16 & 17. The Shop Instructor will lead instruction of woodworking, metalworking and other shop curriculum and projects, co-develop curriculum with the Site Coordinator and Camp Director, lead safety training, support campers with projects and the use of tools and machinery, and generally oversee the wellbeing of all campers. The Shop Instructor will report to the Camp Director.

Duties specific to this position include:

– Teach the core shop curriculum of the camp, including woodworking, metalworking and other maker and industrial arts projects and activities. Ensure that every camper has a meaningful, educational and successful experience at camp as best as possible.
– Co-design and implement a woodshop ‘maker’ and executive functioning curriculum. Integrate EBSB’s principles for engendering engaging, thoughtful and courageous young men. Collaborate with Camp Director & Summer Programs Director to develop and implement curriculum.
– Manage team and colleagues in the shop. Guide colleagues on how to best instruct students, use equipment, and support projects in the shop.
– Maintain the care and cleanliness of the shop and it’s equipment. Coordinate the clean-up and preparation of the space and needed equipment. Address any maintenance or repair needs.
– Coordinate needed supplies for all shop projects activities. Coordinate needed supplies and repairs with Shop Assistant, Camp Director & Summer Programs Director as needed.
– Secure the safety and wellbeing of all campers. Train all campers on safety protocols and respect for equipment in the shop. Ensure physical and emotional well-being for all campers.
– Create an inclusive classroom community. Incorporate identity-safe and anti-bias educational practices that allows a multitude of perspectives to be heard and respected.

In addition, we ask Shop Instructors to do the following:

– Participate in camp and curriculum design meetings before camp launch.
– Assist leading regular team meetings.
– Attend mandatory three-day training in preparation for camp (June 13, 16 & 17).
– Effectively communicate with a diverse parent body as needed.

Desired qualifications specific to this position include:

– At least two years experience teaching or leading youth in woodworking, metal working, and other shop-based curriculum or activities.
– Experienced in woodworking, metalworking and other industrial arts, as well use of shop tools and equipment.
