Job Class: Full Time – Exempt

Position Overview

The Librarian is responsible for facilitating the acquisition, processing, and circulation of print collections in Spanish and English serving faculty and students at both the Alcatraz (Grades PK-1) and San Pablo (Grades 2-8) campuses of EBI; for managing library spaces at both campuses; for facilitating research skill and information literacy instruction throughout the curriculum; for providing weekly read-aloud and library class lessons for students in grades K-5; and for managing the online research and reading databases for the PK-8 community. In collaboration with the PYP and MYP coordinators, learning specialists, and teachers, the Librarian instills a passion for reading and inquiry in all students, and promotes equitable access to information among the entire learning community.

General Responsibilities

Promote a love of reading and lifelong learning.
Remain up to date with the latest publications on literature for children, adolescents, and adults, particularly in relation to the school’s programs and curriculum.
Provide support with research and general access to Library resources.
Collaborate in the procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, and resource sharing of resources in all formats with the whole community
Maintain a professional image for the Library and promote a clear vision for how the Library supports learning.

Specific responsibilities:

Using Follett Destiny ILS, manage original and copy cataloging of all library materials, including picture books, early readers, fiction, graphic novels, nonfiction, and periodicals in Spanish and English; manage materials circulation and patron accounts for faculty and students
Perform regular collection development and collection evaluation and weeding in service of creating current, relevant, diverse collections in service of Units of Inquiry and independent reading at all grade levels, PK-8
Manage and provide training in effective use of research and reading databases
Facilitate weekly read-alouds and check-out periods for grades K-2, and weekly library classes and check-out periods for grades 3-5; provide information literacy and research skill instruction as needed in support of all 6th-8th grade classes
Find appropriate library materials and resources for required IB projects: PYP Exhibition and MYP Community Project.
Promote the ethical use of information: copyright, fair use, and intellectual property.
Promote compliance with the Academic Honesty Policy.
Facilitate training for faculty and staff in use of library resources
Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design, teach, and assess learning experiences that incorporate inquiry learning, information literacies in their formats, critical thinking, and self-assessment.
Collaborate to design experiences that create local and international mindedness.
Maintain and train students in the effective and ethical use of the school’s MLA Citation Guide in properly citing sources of research
Maintain displays and resource lists in support of heritage celebrations, world events, holidays, and observances throughout the year
Train and supervise library volunteers as needed
Ensure that orders are made in a timely manner so that students and teachers have access to the materials needed on time.
Advocate for School Library through an effective public relations program with parents.
Collect and analyze data to improve the school library program; maintain records and ensure correspondence of students.
Upon agreement, undertake any additional responsibilities requested by the Head of School

Qualifications and requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate work in Library and Information Science.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills both in English and Spanish.
Preferred IB experience.
Knowledge of current professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs.
Experience with Destiny Follet, or other on-line public access catalog (OPAC).
Experience using academic research databases.
Experience using at least one referencing citation style commonly used in academia.
Experience in providing library service and information literacy instruction to elementary and middle school students.
Deep current knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.

EBI  uses a salary scale that is based on education and years of experience and ranges from $59,637 to $103,800
