The Berkeley School

The Berkeley School, a progressive independent school in the East Bay portion of the San Francisco Bay Area, seeks a full-time faculty member to join our multicultural, learner-centered community as an assistant teacher in a fourth/fifth grade mixed aged classroom.

The teacher in this position, through mentorship with the lead teacher, has responsibility for assisting in teaching reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, social/emotional learning, social justice/anti-bias, and service learning.  They assume duties including recess and lunch supervision and attend meetings during the day and after school.

Candidates must have a B.A. and some experience working with elementary aged children; candidates in teacher training programs preferred. Ideal candidates will:

  • demonstrate positive classroom management skills;
  • have familiarity with progressive, inquiry-based pedagogy;
  • be committed to equity and cultural responsiveness;
  • communicate effectively with a diverse group of students, colleagues, and families;
  • show comfort with technology use.

The successful candidate will be professional, collaborative, and enthusiastic about participating in our dynamic community of intellectually curious, lifelong learners, all of whom are dedicated to professional development and a reflective teaching practice.

Founded in 1964 as Berkeley Montessori School, The Berkeley School is an intentionally small school of 280 students from early childhood through middle school.
