Full-time Position: Theater and Theater Tech

Expected Beginning Date: August 2019

 

Position Description:

This position will teach theater and theater tech classes, direct theater productions, manage the theater, and run the theater tech crew.

 

The Athenian Art Department is a nurturing laboratory of creativity. We facilitate the creation of original ideas into a transmittable form through hands-on, experiential instruction and open, honest critique and reflection. The Athenian art teacher moves fluidly between the roles of teacher, mentor, and coach.

 

At Athenian we believe that art is about asking questions rather than giving answers and we seek to help our students see the complexity of simple ideas and vice versa. We place equal importance on concept and craft as you can’t have content without form or form without content. We inspire our students to see beauty while learning to harness the power of art to inspire social change.

 

We are a collaborative department who works together to create concerts, festivals and exhibitions. We look for skilled artist educators who are experts in their field and give them the support to build their own programs within the context of the Athenian mission.

 

 

This full-time FTE position qualifies for full benefits and requires limited co-curricular duties.

 

Core Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years experience teaching theater and/or theater production and working with high school and/or middle school students
  • Experience directing plays, musicals and/or other theatrical productions
  • Experience working in professional  theater
  • Ability to collaborate with a small and creative art department
  • Demonstrated commitment to education for democracy, justice, equity, inclusion, community service, and environmental stewardship

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • BFA, MFA, or teaching credential in theater, theater tech, or a related field
  • Professional experience doing theater design, and/or live event production
  • Experience with 3D media including woodworking and metalsmithing
  • Experience managing a crew and logistics for live events
  • Proficiency with power tools, lighting and sound consoles, scenic construction, and rigging
  • Experience and expertise in managing all elements of theater/event production including design and execution of scenery, lighting, sound, costumes, etc.
  • Understanding of independent schools

·         Experience working in a boarding school with an international student population
