Pay Rate: $20-25/hour (depending on experience)
Recess Supervisor/Classroom Assistant: This position is designed to provide consistent support for the school’s recess programs in primary and middle school, to supervise the recess time and develop strategies to support all children in developing social-emotional skills and feeling safe while participating during recess. The position also involves assisting in other capacities to support the primary and middle school programs, including helping with lunch setup and supervision and assisting in classrooms and specialist classes as needed. The overall goal of the position is to support the students seamlessly throughout their day in academic, social, and emotional areas. The Recess Supervisor and Classroom Assistant will interact directly with students and teachers on a regular basis and work with the division directors to develop strategies for this new position and to evaluate the progress of strategies and plans once implemented.
Afterschool Program Assistant: This position includes a variety of activities involved in assisting the after school program director in providing a high quality experience for students and families and meeting best practice standards in relation to all aspects of the Afterschool program.
Specific Responsibilities:
The Recess Supervisor/Classroom Assistant will:
- Interact directly with students to provide social support during the morning and lunch recesses.
- Serve as the Lunch Recess “teacher”; actively facilitate social interactions, extend students’ circles of play, and resolve conflicts among all students.
- Organize the primary school recess board and initiate new activities as needed.
- Meet regularly with the primary and middle school directors to discuss goals and share information on students and classroom and recess activities.
- Meet with teachers to discuss playground strategies and to design proactive methods to improve the quality of learning during the unstructured times of day.
- Observe in classrooms to develop an understanding of the structure and routines established by each team of teachers and the culture of each grade level group.
- Serve as an available “go to” person for teachers who need additional help.
- Share information on students’ behavior and activities during recess with classroom teachers, division directors, and other teachers as appropriate.
The Afterschool Program Assistant will:
- Assist Program Manager in day-to-day activities and other duties as needed.
- Supervise students as they participate in organized activities such as gardening, woodwork, craft, circle games and sports, as well as general group activities and playtime.
- Participate in preparing the environment for students, including cleaning duties before and after each session and preparing and supervising the delivery of snack.
- Represent the after school program with a professional image at all times.
- Engage appropriately with parents, including greeting upon arrival and communicating about students and the program.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Create and maintain a safe learning environment for students.
Qualifications include:
- Experience working with elementary school children in an academic setting, or similar setting such as summer camp
- Completion of at least one year of college, preferred
- Courteous and professional demeanor
- Ability to follow directions, communicate effectively with colleagues and students, and respond appropriately to supervision
- Detail oriented and well-organized
- TB clearance and background fingerprinting clearance required
- A commitment through the school year is expected
