We seek an enthusiastic individual to join the College Counseling team, made up of five counselors and an assistant.  The new counselor will advise roughly 35 seniors, 35 juniors, and 35 sophomores.  They will counsel students on all aspects of college planning, including course selection, as well as write recommendation letters, establish relationships with college and university admission officers, assist in parent education event planning, and carry out other office duties as needed.

This is a full time, 12-month position that reports to the Director of College Counseling.  The position will begin in June 2022.

Primary Responsibilities:

Addressing the social and emotional pressures on students and families as associated with the college search, application, and admissions processes
Writing official school letters of recommendations for approximately 35 seniors
Meeting with college representatives who visit the Menlo campus and serving as a liaison with college admissions offices throughout the academic year
Visiting colleges and universities throughout the academic year and attending national and regional college admissions counseling conferences and forums
Maintaining a personalized approach to counseling and working with students and families to reinforce the philosophy that “fit” in the college process is different for every student
Understanding of the objectives and mission of an independent college preparatory school; possess the energy, patience, enthusiasm, and sense of humor necessary to thrive in working with adolescents in an academic setting
Work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while maintaining a supportive and approachable demeanor
Strong work ethic, good judgment, and a high level of integrity expected
Developing and presenting educational programming to our 9th-12th Grade students and families on the college search and admissions processes in conjunction with the college counseling team
Required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience include but are not limited to:

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or postgraduate work in subject matter or counseling strongly preferred.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in college or university admissions and/or college counseling at a high school.
Demonstrated leadership and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Experience with online college admissions software (SCOIR) is strongly preferred.
Ability to work well with students; willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the Menlo community. Demonstrated interest in working with adolescents and their parents.
A clear understanding of the complex nature of the college counseling and college application process.
Excellent communication skills and eagerness to work as a collaborative team member are essential.
Spanish speaking ability is strongly preferred.
Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
