Part-Time Learning Specialist

Saint Andrew’s is seeking a part-time Learning Specialist for the fall of 2020. The successful candidate will join a community of dedicated, compassionate, energetic, and experienced adults – faculty and parents alike – who are committed to the mission to develop “as fully as possible the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social capacities of each student.”

The part-time learning specialist will provide small group support to students in the lower and middle school. You will work closely with students, the current learning specialist, teachers, administrators, and parents to develop differentiation strategies tailored to each student’s particular learning style, in order to support their academic progress. To be successful in this position, you should have an insightful understanding of effective teaching methods for different learning styles and aptitudes. The top candidate will have excellent listening and observational skills, as well as an empathetic mindset.

Learning Specialist Responsibilities:

Help students develop effective learning strategies that promote academic improvement.

Participate in the SST process and Parent-Teacher Conferences for students directly on their caseload

Educate parents and teachers about learning differences

Effectively communicate how a student’s unique learning profile presents in the classroom.

Support teachers and administrators to conduct screenings or assessments for the purposes of educational planning and intervention

Keep up to date with new developments in teaching methods, educational psychology, differentiation in the classroom, and co-teaching methods.

Build supportive, trusting relationships with students and teachers

Provide parents and teachers with useful resources for the benefit of students.

Learning Specialist Requirements and Qualifications

The successful candidate must love working with elementary and middle school children, have compassion for all learners, and an eagerness to understand all kinds of minds. Preferred qualifications include an Education Specialist credential and/or a Master’s degree in education or related field. The ideal candidate must have extensive knowledge of learning differences and differentiation strategies. Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, and school administration. Specialized training in reading, math, or writing intervention strategies is (i.e. Orton Gillingham, Wilson, Barton, Lindamood Bell, Making Math Real, Step up to Writing, Lucy Caulkins) is a plus.
