Purpose Statement
The ideal candidate for the PEWR (Philosophy, Ethics, and World Religion) position will be an engaging educator with experience teaching interdisciplinary courses such as Myth and Meaning, Philosophy, Ethics, and Social Justice. This teacher will help students explore big ideas, moral dilemmas, systems of power, cultural narratives, and human rights movements through discussion-based, inquiry-driven learning.
Through critical analysis, ethical reasoning, and historical inquiry, students will engage with diverse perspectives and develop essential skills in advocacy, moral philosophy, and social justice activism. The ideal candidate will inspire students to analyze contemporary injustices, challenge dominant narratives, and apply ethical frameworks to real-world change efforts.
Beyond the classroom, the teacher will serve as an advisor, mentor, and active participant in the school community, supporting students’ academic and personal growth.
Key Responsibilities
Teach four sections within the PEWR department, which may include Myth and Meaning, Philosophy, Ethics, and/or Social Justice, based on expertise and department needs.
Foster critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and intellectual curiosity through discussion-based learning, using diverse voices and global perspectives.
Examine structures of power, privilege, oppression, and resistance in historical and contemporary contexts.
Empower students to explore ethical dilemmas, deconstruct biases, and advocate for social justice in their communities.
Guide students in analyzing contemporary issues—including racial justice, human rights, environmental ethics, criminal justice reform, and global inequality—through philosophical and historical frameworks.
Encourage activist scholarship, helping students bridge academic study with civic engagement and community-based learning.
Provide timely and constructive feedback to support students’ growth in analytical writing, persuasive argumentation, and discussion.
Serve as an advisor to a small group of approximately 12 students, facilitating weekly meetings, discussions, and mentorship.
Moderate a co-curricular activity, such as a philosophy club, ethics debate team, or a service-learning project that engages with local and global justice movements.
Participate actively in schoolwide experiential education, including retreats, assemblies, and special events that center on equity, identity, and community engagement.
Collaborate with colleagues to enhance interdisciplinary learning, integrate justice-focused curricula, and strengthen DEI initiatives within the school.
Support admissions efforts, including school tours, open houses, and prospective student events.
Attend and contribute to school-wide events, such as performances, athletic competitions, and community gatherings.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Philosophy, Religious Studies, Ethics, History, Social Sciences, or a related discipline).
Minimum of three years of high school teaching experience.
Proficiency with educational technology and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
Commitment to discussion-based, inquiry-driven, and student-centered learning.
Strong background in critical thinking, ethics, and interdisciplinary teaching with an emphasis on social justice issues.
Previous professional development experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related subject or Education.
Single Subject Teaching Credential in a relevant field (accepted from all states).
Experience teaching philosophy, religious studies, mythology, or social justice topics.
Background in coordinating service-learning, activism, or community engagement projects.
Experience working with international (including ELL) students.
Familiarity with digital learning tools in the classroom.
Proficiency with Canvas or similar Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $72,260- $140,000 annually, commensurate with skill set and experience. This position is classified as exempt and includes an excellent benefits package, including medical/dental/vision/life insurance, a matching 403b retirement plan, and daily lunch on work days.
