Middle School Counselor, Part Time

San Francisco Friends School, a Quaker school located in the Mission District of San Francisco, seeks an experienced Middle School Counselor starting in the 2022–2023 school year, part time (50% role).

The school looks to recruit faculty and staff who resonate with the Friends School mission, which provides an exemplary education in a community dedicated to problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, social justice, and quiet reflection. Our Quaker mission also compels us to create a diverse and inclusive community; the institution is looking for a person who will thrive and contribute to such a community, both within and beyond the walls of the school.

San Francisco Friends School is looking for an energetic, learner-centric half-time Middle School Counselor eager to support the social, emotional, and mental health needs of students. While predominantly working with the Middle School community (5th–8th grades), the MS Counselor will also work effectively with our Counseling Director and collaborate with teachers and staff, and offer individual and small group counseling to students.

Responsibilities include counseling with a systems perspective, constantly looking for ways to connect and support the school/parent/student team. The candidate must possess a strong understanding of mental health and counseling, from both a neuropsychological and practical school-based perspective. Being visible and collaborative, working to promote an atmosphere of trust and rapport with students, teachers, and families is essential to the role. The Middle School Counselor will be involved in our advisory program, working with teachers to develop and bolster advisory groups (small year-long groups of students led by a teacher) and being available for coaching/consultation about students, group facilitation, themes that might (will) emerge related to social emotional wellbeing.

Preferred Qualities:

Master’s degree in MSW, LCSW, MFT with license, or MS in Counseling preferred.
Experience working with middle school students as a counselor
Openness to Quaker philosophy
Highly collaborative and creative team player
Knowledge of the full continuum of mental health care services, such as prevention and intervention
Language skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or Hindi preferred
As this is an in-person position, candidates must be up-to-date on vaccinations for Covid-19.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, and three references to:
