St. Paul’s Episcopal School, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, enrolls approximately 380 students from diverse backgrounds in Kindergarten – Grade 8. Position Summary: The Director of Middle School oversees all program and staff related aspects of the Middle School including curriculum, teaching, and learning. The Director of the Middle School understands and implements the Mission & Values and the Portrait of a Graduate (the model of educational excellence), reviews instructional programming and schedules, and oversees the daily operations of the 6-8 program. They supervise the faculty and staff in the Middle School; through an equity lens, with an eye on the curriculum guide and Portrait of a Graduate, they assess performance against faculty job descriptions, assist teachers in planning curriculum, and adapt content for individual class needs and student support. The Director of Middle School reports to the Head of School, sits on the Leadership Team, and partners closely with the Director of Lower School and other administrators. In concert with the Head of School, Director of Lower School, and members of the Curriculum Committee and Learning Services Department, the Director of Middle School creates and oversees the content, articulation, and evaluation of the 6-8 curricula and coordinates all areas of curriculum, supervision, and student learning needs to ensure school wide curricular continuity.

Job Responsibilities include:

-Supervise, manage, and support the Middle School faculty and staff and coordination of faculty and student schedules
-Work with Leadership Team to oversee, coordinate, and implement school wide initiatives and operations
-Manage and oversee high school selection process
-Interface and communicate with Middle School parents/guardians and families in support of student learning and well-being
-Oversee the coordination of annual overnight trips for all three grades
-Work closely with the Head of School, Director of Lower School and DEI Leads to coordinate and facilitate equity, inclusion, and belonging throughout the program
-Work with the Director of Finance to manage the Middle School budget
-The Director effectively leads and supports the faculty, students, and parents through the Middle School experience.
-Partner closely with the learning specialist and/or consulting therapist to ensure effective support (i.e. accommodations) for student success
-Oversee professional development and evaluation for the Middle School team
-Organize and execute 8th Grade Graduation

This is a full-time position with competitive salary and excellent benefits, commensurate with experience. The start date is July 1, 2022.

Desired Qualifications and Traits

-Bachelor’s degree required/Master’s Preferred and 5+ years related experience
-Strong familiarity and experience working with middle school students, program, educators
-Advanced reading and writing skills; strong written and verbal communication skills
-Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and relate well with other administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and students
-Strong cultural competency and diversity, equity, and inclusion experience and commitment to ongoing practice and development
-Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and punctually
-Excellent follow-through and project management
-Highly organized and detail-oriented and able to complete projects in a timely manner
-Collaborative leadership style, with the desire and ability to be a “team player”
