St. Paul’s Episcopal School, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, enrolls approximately 380 students from diverse backgrounds in Kindergarten – Grade 8. Position Summary

This Lower School Math Specialist position is a supporting teaching position for grades K-5. The ideal candidate will report to the Director of Lower School and be responsible for supporting teachers and students with the implementation of a developmentally-appropriate math program and the development of both differentiated math instruction and accompanying formative and summative math assessments in grades K-5. This can include coaching teachers how to effectively differentiate within their classroom setting during math lessons, and working in small group settings inside and outside the classroom with students who need challenging extensions and/or students who need academic support. The Lower School Math Specialist would also lead professional development training aligned with mathematical teaching, learning, and neuroscience.

Currently, the academic curriculum includes the following programs – Bridges Math, Units of Study in Reading and Writing Workshop from Teachers College, and Responsive Classroom.

Additional responsibilities will include coverage for recesses, arrival/dismissal, participation in committee work, and active engagement in our community-wide diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work.

The students are supported by specialists in science, physical education, music, Spanish, and library.

Job Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the Director of Lower School and Head of School to ensure the development of and coordination of the Lower School (K-5) math curriculum.
Work with Lower School classroom teachers and specialists to seek opportunities for natural connections across subjects with mathematical thinking
Work with Lower School classroom teachers to support students with a variety of learning styles as well as to create and utilize formative and summative assessments to inform instructional decisions.
Model strategies for differentiating instruction to enrich, remediate, and accommodate learning needs
Partner with the Middle School Math team to ensure programmatic continuity of instruction and content K-8.
Promote and lead various math workshops for faculty, parents, and prospective families
Maintain and update the scope and sequence and curriculum framework for mathematics K-5.
Facilitate and oversee division-wide math assessment practices, including administration, scoring, evaluating, and communicating progress to teachers and parents
Actively engage in the school community by participating in faculty meetings, recess and lunch duties, committees, and additional school events
Communicate about the math program and learning with families through face-to-face conversations, newsletters, emails, and/or blog posts
Actively participate in professional development with a growth mindset and a healthy sense of humor
Maintain professional collegial relationships that encourage sharing, planning, and working together toward improved instructional skills and student success
Desired Qualifications and Traits

Bachelor’s degree
3-5 years lower elementary teaching/classroom experience
Competence and familiarity with teaching math
Passion for working with elementary-aged children, with a solid commitment to the teaching profession and social and emotional learning
Ability to foster strong student connections
A commitment to cultural competency, antiracist pedagogy, and a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community
Flexible and able to handle transitions effectively
Values collegiality with other teachers and administrators
Has a warm and energetic personality, a good sense of humor, and interest in working with teams
Practices excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
Strong organization and planning skills
Facility with a wide array of pedagogy and assessment practices
Flexibility in implementing educational programs in a variety of contexts (on-campus, hybrid, fully remote)

Experience with differentiated instructional practices and/or a background in special education
