1st Grade Classroom Teacher

St. Paul’s Episcopal School, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, enrolls approximately 380 students from diverse backgrounds in Kindergarten – Grade 8. Position Summary

This Lower School Teacher position is a core teaching position for 1st grade. The ideal candidate is an experienced and dynamic teacher that has experience integrating thematic units across the curriculum and as a demonstrated commitment to culturally inclusive and responsive teaching practices. This teacher will work with their grade level teaching partner in addition to collaborating with teachers throughout the division to develop, modify, and implement a grade-specific curriculum that is aligned with the scope of the overall program. This individual will be committed to continuing to develop their teaching craft with a growth mindset, be adept at communicating effectively with both children and adults, and will foster a developmentally appropriate cooperative learning environment for their students. Currently, the academic curriculum includes the following programs – Bridges Math, Units of Study in Reading and Writing Workshop from Teachers College, and Responsive Classroom.

Additional responsibilities will include coverage for recesses, arrival/dismissal, participation in committee work, and active engagement in our community-wide diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work.

The students are supported by specialists in science, physical education, music, Spanish, and library.

Job Responsibilities:

Serve as a head teacher in a 1st grade classroom
Partner closely with one’s grade-level teaching colleague and work closely with teachers across the program
Teach language arts, reading, writing, social studies, mathematics, science, and partner with the K-5 Math & Science Specialist
Mentor and support a resident teacher
Attend weekly grade-level team and faculty/staff meetings
Perform all other assigned school-related duties (e.g., recess supervision, meetings, committee work, etc.)
Engage in curriculum development, mapping, and planning
Participate in professional development
Engage in active diversity, equity, and inclusion work that supports the mission of the school

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree
3-5 years lower elementary teaching/classroom experience
Competence and familiarity with teaching multiple academic subjects
Flexible and able to handle transitions effectively
Values collegiality with other teachers and administrators
Has a warm and energetic personality, a good sense of humor, and interest in working with teams
Practices excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
Strong organization, planning, and classroom management skills
Love and passion for working with young children

Desired Qualifications and Traits

Master’s or Teaching Credential
Experience working in a private/independent school setting
Experience teaching Units of Study in Reading and Writing Workshop from Teachers College, Bridges Math
Trained in Responsive Classroom
