St. Paul’s Episcopal School, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, enrolls approximately 380 students from diverse backgrounds in Kindergarten – Grade 8. Position Summary

The Middle School Science Teacher position is a core teaching position for grade 6-8. The ideal candidate is an experienced and dynamic teacher that has a deep interest, passion, and expertise for teaching science. This teacher has experience and interest in integrating thematic science units across the curriculum, especially with mathematics and service learning. This individual will be committed to continuing to develop their teaching craft with a growth mindset, and be adept at communicating effectively with both students and adults, and will foster a developmentally appropriate cooperative learning environment for their students. St. Paul’s middle school science curriculum starts with earth science with a focus on Lake Merritt in 6th grade, life science in 7th grade, and physical science in 8th grade. The science teacher will collaborate with Middle School Math teachers, and may co-teach at least one block per week.

Additional responsibilities will include serving as an advisor, coverage for recesses, arrival/dismissal, participation in committee work, and active engagement in our community-wide diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work.

 

Job Responsibilities:

●      Teach 7th and/or 8th grade Physical and Life Science

●      Expose students to a multicultural perspective of universal human experience through the science curriculum and beyond

●      Partner closely with one’s grade-level teaching colleague and work closely with teachers across the program

●      Attend weekly grade-level/departmental team and faculty/staff meetings

●      Engage in curriculum development, mapping, and planning

●      Perform all other assigned school-related duties (e.g. recess supervision, meetings, committee work, etc.)

●      Participate in professional development

●      Engage in active diversity, equity, and inclusion work that supports the mission of the school

 

Minimum Qualifications

●      Bachelor’s degree

●      3-5 years middle school teaching/classroom experience

●      Has an interest in and/or experience with teaching social emotional curriculum to middle school students

●      Flexible and able to handle transitions effectively

●      Has experience collaborating with a team of teachers to deliver curriculum

●      Values collegiality with other teachers and administrators

●      Has a warm and energetic personality, a good sense of humor, and interest in working with teams

●      Practices excellent communication skills (written and verbal)

●      Strong organization, planning, and classroom management skills

●      Love, passion and understanding for working with middle school students

Desired Qualifications and Traits

●      Master’s or Teaching Credential

●      Experience working in a private/independent school setting

●      Trained in Responsive Classroom
