Math Specialist

We are currently accepting applications for a part-time Math Specialist position to work with students at various math levels. Successful applicants start Fall 2023. Competitive salary commensurate with experience available, with the potential of growth over time.

Tessellations is a progressive K-8 non-profit school for gifted learners based in Cupertino, CA. Our mission is to provide challenging experiential education that recognizes and nurtures the individual strengths of gifted learners, empowering them to confidently express who they are and pursue a meaningful life. At Tessellations, community is a core value, as it is the reason our small and mighty school was able to form and thrive despite the global pandemic. Our team consists of passionate, qualified and dedicated staff from diverse backgrounds and includes nationally renowned gifted experts. Our first year was online only. In our second year, we moved onto our beautiful campus and quadrupled in size, and we also added our Nature Campus. We’re in our third year with excellent staff and student retention, and extremely high family satisfaction. Next year we’ll be moving again to a larger campus in order to house our growing population, and in Fall 2024 we will launch our high school.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach two math classes daily (Monday through Friday), approximately 15-20 hours per week.
  • Create and foster a safe and supportive learning environment where all students are heard, respected, and engaged.
  • Use curriculum as a backbone to guide planning of Math instruction
  • Implement lessons, activities, and instruction while adapting to students’ intellectual, physical, and social-emotional needs
  • Maintain organizational systems in physical and digital space
  • Regularly use and maintain documentation of multiple forms of assessment to gauge student learning and inform next steps in teaching
  • Prepare progress reports and report cards
  • Ongoing communication with families around student strengths and challenges
  • Attend family-teacher meetings as scheduled and as needed to support student learning

Requirements

  • Prior elementary/middle/high school math teaching experience
  • Experience teaching gifted learners
  • Passing a criminal background check upon hire
  • Proficiency with technology (GSuite in particular)

Bonus Points

  • Experience with Art of Problem Solving Materials and/or Bridges Math
  • Experience teaching high-level math such as Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A problem-solving approach to mathematics
  • Experience facilitating math circles
  • Social-emotional teaching experience
  • Familiarity with and commitment to DEIJ issues
  • Enthusiastic life-long learner
  • Openness and flexibility in designing improved learning experiences

Compensation

Salary range: $47 – 60 per hour
