PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Athenian School is seeking an instrumental music teacher to teach three courses as part of our Upper School arts program. Two courses are performance-based jazz bands – one intermediate band class and the other an advanced band. The instructor will select music and arrange it for both bands leading up to a late May performance. The third course is an advanced theory and production class and the second semester is planned to be a digital production unit in our school studio.
Successful candidates will have demonstrated the desire to, and the capabilities for, collaboratively generating curricula and classroom practices that help students develop musical and artistic habits of mind and learn the specific skills necessary to express and apply them. Such candidates will also be drawn to, and meaningfully contribute to finding ways to express in our classrooms, Athenian’s pillars: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, Service. In addition to instruction, teachers at Athenian are expected to participate in community life through a variety of programs, events, and opportunities.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Successful candidates will demonstrate a clear commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion to support students from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. They will model flexibility, a mission-aligned approach to supporting student growth and strong initiative. They will possess the ability to collaborate effectively with students and colleagues, strong organizational skills, and an understanding of and appreciation for working with adolescents. We seek candidates with a BFA and/or MFA in instrumental music, experience teaching youth ensembles and with arranging music. An ability to oversee a small chamber orchestra is a plus.

Athenian provides excellent benefits and salaries are competitive and commensurate with work experience and education. Our faculty salary range is $75,900 – $137,800 in addition to stipends for completed Masters and Doctoral degrees. Community members enjoy meals on campus and use of athletics facilities, including a pool, gym and fitness center.
All employees participate in school wide professional development, and have the opportunity to pursue a range of additional professional growth opportunities. These include, but are not limited to, funded participation in professional conferences and continuing education opportunities. Athenian provides needed training for CPR/AED certification.
All employees are expected to attend all-school functions relevant to their role and to participate in supporting the student experience with other school duties as requested by their direct supervisor.
