POSITION: Science Teacher (Biology & Ecology)

We are seeking an instructor in Science to begin teaching classes on February 3. The Bay School science program employs a pedagogical approach that incorporates inquiry-based practice, and real-world applications. We strongly value student experimental design, data-driven argumentation, and designing curricula that empower all students to see themselves as scientists. Our program is physics-first in the ninth grade, followed by tenth-grade chemistry and eleventh-grade biology. In addition, we offer second-exposure, advanced courses in physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as a variety of electives, including climate change, biopsychology, California geology, and astronomy, among others. Block periods allow students to delve deeply into rich problem/inquiry-based learning across all courses. We are looking for an experienced science teacher who has a strong commitment to innovative curricular design, progressive pedagogy, and social justice–all in service of student learning and growth.

This instructor is responsible for teaching two sections of the elective Human Health and Disease and one section of the core course Biology 1 during the spring semester (Feb. 3- May 20, 2022) and co-teaches one immersive course, Water in the West, with a humanities teacher (May 31 – June 16, 2022).

Each semester-long class meets three times a week in a rotating block schedule. Each Immersive course meets daily for three weeks from 9am-3pm, and includes field trips and experiential learning that extend beyond the traditional school day. In addition to class preparation and classroom teaching, science teachers are responsible for:

  • collaborative curricular development and alignment
  • designing skills-based formative and summative assessments
  • timely grading and feedback
  • regular communication with students, guardians, and advisors regarding student progress
  • one-on-one student meetings as needed
  • weekly faculty and course team meetings

All teaching staffulty have additional responsibilities to support the wellbeing of our community and the growth of individual students. These responsibilities may include but are not limited to serving as an advisor, chaperoning social events, writing letters of recommendation, serving on committees and research groups, helping with admissions events and presentations.

The ideal candidate

  • has a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, ecology or related field;

The school offers a salary commensurate with experience. This position does not qualify for benefits.
