MS Health & Wellness Teacher (6th-8th) and Athletic Director (5th-8th)

Reports To: Raquel Vizcaíno, Head of Middle School

Job Status: 100% FTE plus stipend

FLSA Classication: Exempt

Compensation: $65,000 – $140,000 based on years of experience and degrees earned

Start Date: August 6, 2025

OVERVIEW

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

MS Health and Wellness Teacher

  • Affirm program objectives and philosophy
  • Plan and manage a dynamic and differentiated classroom program and environment that include team building challenges, individualized activities, cooperative, sports and games, and traditional athletics
  • Teach physical education in coed instructional groups ranging from 16 to 20 students
  • Collaborate on the health curriculum and teach health classes as determined
  • Coordinate with the other health and wellness teachers to ensure program continuity
  • Assess individual development with written assessments provided to students and families at determined intervals
  • Communicate with colleagues and administrators as needed
  • Communicate regularly with parenting adults through meetings, conferences, and reports
  • Supervise on recess and lunch duties as assigned
  • Attend staff meetings and any other meetings as determined by the division head
  • May have advisory duties and teach elective classes as determined by the MS division head
  • Participate on overnight trips
  • Preform all other duties as assigned

MS Athletic Director

  • Hire and mentor coaches for all after school athletics (cross country, volleyball, basketball, and futsal)
  • Be present for all home games and partner with administration as needed
  • Maintain the athletics calendar and collaborate with peer school Atheltic Directors and leagues to schedule athletic seasons
  • Fulfill all responsibilities to host and staff athletics competitions at SFS or co-host with other schools at designated locations
  • Maintain a level of sportsmanship reflective of The San Francisco School’s mission, especially to embrace diversity and practice mutual respect
  • Encourage participation numbers, fostering school spirit and mascot brand awareness
  • Determine team rosters in collaboration with coaches if applicable
  • Manage the Community Center, equipment, and uniforms
  • Communicate effectively with coaches, parenting adults, and students
  • Communicate with officials/refs
  • Collaborate with the CFOO to set the Athletics budget and manage the budget throughout the year
  • Attend any league-affiliated meetings and fulfill league responsibilities
  • Ensure needed staffing for all games
  • Fulfill leadership roles within League as appropriate
  • Representing Middle School athletic program with prospective families as appropriate
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, physical education, or a relevant field
  • Minimum of three years of relevant teaching experience, preferably in an independent school
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    demonstrated leadership and facilitative skills
  • Administrative experience, including hiring and managing supervisees, overseeing a budget, and working with an administrative team
  • Experience working with youth sports leagues preferred
  • Coaching experience in any of all of the sports offered (cross country, volleyball, basketball, futsal) preferred
  • Knowledge of the high school athletic landscape in the San Francisco Bay Area preferred
  • All prospective employees must be able to clear a background check and TB screening

Work Environment

Physical Demands

  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
  • Able to occasionally lift up to 40 lbs
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Able to run and demonstrate lessons in a physical education class setting

 

Environmental Conditions

  • Work primarily in the Community Center (gym) and outdoors on the greentop or occasionally at Palega Park or other outdoor recreational facilities
  • Work in a shared office with other health and wellness teachers, with team meetings occurring in shared spaces

Mental/Emotional Demands

  • Work in a fast-paced environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
