Urban School of San Francisco seeks a full-time Spanish Teacher/Department Chair to teach all levels of the Spanish language. Ideal candidates should have a strong background in Spanish language and literature, native or near-native fluency, comfort with an immersion classroom, and an understanding of the language acquisition process and the needs of adolescents. This is a full-time position that includes advising a small group of students.
The school is looking for a dynamic, creative teacher who has enthusiasm for working with high school students, a commitment to innovative pedagogy and collaboration with colleagues, comfort and familiarity with the use of relevant technology to enhance learning, and a commitment to equity pedagogy, antiracist teaching practices, and to their own continued professional growth. Ideal candidates should have curriculum development experience and at least two years’ experience teaching Spanish at the secondary level.
Urban School strives to ignite a passion for learning and to inspire its students to become self-motivated, lifelong participants in their education and active citizens in their communities. The World Languages at Urban:
Urban’s World Language Department aims to motivate students to become proficient in Mandarin Chinese, French or Spanish by their senior year and to continue their language learning beyond Urban in order to participate more efficiently in a world made irrevocably smaller by technological innovation, globalization and immigration.
The tools of proficiency encompass both form (grammatical precision, extensive and expressive vocabulary, near-native accent and intonation) and message (authentic and spontaneous communication exchanges). We train our students to access and balance these two domains of language production from their first year onward by immersion in the target language, avoidance of English, and both instruction and assessment practices that require daily and active participation. Digital technology plays a pivotal role in the language classroom, in particular because of its unique and intrinsic capacity to shape, facilitate and improve communication.
